Hi all, I was a member here some 5-6 years ago, when about to move to Spain, however life took another twist and I ended up in China, now am looking to retire in Cebu. So any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome back. I live in Bohol where I have built a house. Where in Cebu are you planning to live?

I usually spend time in Negros and I noticed there was a big difference between the standard of living of the people between the two islands.
Bohol seemed much better off, better roads, housing seemed to be built to a good standard, people were more open and approachable.
Any particular reason why there is such a difference?

Why 2 years? Are you building yourself or buying from a developer?

I was in Bohol a couple of years ago and loved it, stayed at Anda Beach, beautiful!

I have also spent time in Negros and found the people very friendly but not as approachable as the Boholanos. Maybe the extra tourist influence from Chocolate Hills and Panglao etc. has made the difference?

It is through a developer, but the plot I have purchased wont be released until next year, they want to complete phase one first. Its a large site, between a river and the sea, Northern part of Argao, the company is well regarded on Cebu so hopefully it is a safe purchase. especially as I get a certificate of compliance (I think it is called) which means I am legally allowed to purchase the land, as the site is regarded as a condominium.

Good luck hope it goes well. I bought my own land and then employed a Filipino builder who I knew had worked in construction in London. He bought over men from Surigao and we finished the whole project (350 sq m) plus road, fencing, bridge in 9 months.

I live North of Cebu City past Liloan. I have been to Argao the seabed when I went was full of green starfish. Yes a very nice place.
We had our house architect designed and built, we wanted a small two storey, or else a large single floor. We ended up with a large two storey. We opted for a real tiled roof, deadens the sound of the rain, but it sure rattled when we had the big earthquake a year ago.
There are lots of outlets now where you can buy specialist materials. Ace, Britool and CItI Hardware, having the greatest stock.
Signal in Mandaue are good for all electrical stuff. I would if I were you bring over a goodly supply of junction boxes, and the bathroom pull-cord switches you might need.

Sorry Britool should read Belmont in Mandaue, near the flyover (North Side). It is a real treasure trove of tools and hardware. Between them Citi and Ace, you should find most things that you need. For specialist paint, Red Sea under the flyover should have what you want, if unobtainable elsewhere.
For the roofing aluminium (aluminum) nails were unobtainable, but copper ones were used instead.
