How little we learned in school !
The Spaniards as Colonial Masters in the Philippines
Hand on heart, how many of us came across anything about the Pilipinas when in school or college ?

Re: History
As part of history of the colonies. Naturally, primarily the UK but we also looked at the Dutch, Spanish and Portugese colonies but not in any depth.

Re: History
I remember from history lessons that the British administered the Philippines from 1662 to 1664. Apart from that not much else.

Re: History
It was covered by one of my university courses, but not in a great deal of detail. I'd imagine most people know it was part of the Spanish empire.

Re: History
I read up a lot of the Philippines history. Manila Bay 1st May 1898 was where history was made, and the US Navy took a prominent place. Until then nobody would have thought, they could defeat the Spanish.
I do not remember the Philippines being mentioned overmuch, during history lessons at school. Though perhaps, I should have paid more attention in class.
I have read up on Philippine history since the late seventies. When researching Magellan's expedition. I was originally trying to find out, the true number who circumnavigated the globe. The figure varies widely from seven to seventeen crewmen, not including Juan Sebastian Del Cano the navigator.
I like visiting places, of historic interest. Fort San. Pedro being one. Trying hard to imagine how it was, when in full use. The alleged site, of The Battle Of Mactan is another.

Re: History
I could go for the typo excuse but I did believe it was 1662-4. Either my memory is not as good as it should be or my history teacher was rubbish, my money would be on bad memory. My only excuse is that it was 50 years ago.
