Re: Teaching couple moving in August
Hi Richard and Hansc,
Welcome to JB. I'll echo SushiFan's sentiment that it would be really wise to visit multiple places when you get here as the quality and design taste (if you could call it that in some cases) varies considerably.
I recently looked into moving to a new house as well - some were really quite nice and some were pretty, erm, not very nice. I could share the numbers of three property agents that I viewed with if you'd like, just pm me.
Richard, I don't think you'll have too much of a problem getting a nice place within your budget.
If you're working in Setia Eco Gardens, one thing you could consider is living in the area as it'll be close to work, then drive out when you need to. Other areas that you could look into are East Ledang, Eco Botanic (which is right next to EduCity), Leisure Farm - some precincts here don't allow dogs, Medini and Horizon Hills. I think you'll get far nicer places here than the neighbouring Bukit Indah itself.
If you are considering Sky Loft, just note that there might be a bit of traffic on your doorstep when the malls shut at night - especially on weekends.
One new site to have a look at is speedrent.com, where instead of dealing with agents and paying extra fees, you deal directly with the owners and the site handles all of the contracts and stamp duties. They don't have too have places for JB, but you can give it a try. Just note that responses might not be as prompt.
There's heaps of places to get you started on your local cuisine adventure, if you're into that. I can't tell you too much about the nightlife unfortunately, ....I really need to stop being a hermit.
That said, the teaching community will probably get you up to speed pronto like, so you shouldn't have any worries there.

Hannah, we are teaching at the Tenby International School in Setia Eco Garden which is outside of JB proper, are we going to be future colleagues?
@geedee - It's good to know that there is a flourishing expat teaching community that we can involve ourselves in to socialise.
Thanks guys - we're so excited now... Got flight details now... ARGHHH!!!
