Default Why does no one mention Adelaide??

Just been watching 'wanted down under' and a few of these shows are promoting Adelaide quite positively... 'cheapo housing' 'great lifestyle' etc etc..

For me personally Adelaide wasn't on the backpackers list when I did it and I asked a few peeps and they said 'twas as exciting as Canberra and not as warm'...

Anyhow, my other half fancies nursing here now (although i want brisbane!) especially when she has seen how cheap housing is compared to Sydney/Brisbane etc...

Whats your opinions on Adelaide?

Adelaide is a beautiful city. It's pretty laid back, but there is a lot of things going on here most of the year - like the beer festival, clipsal, adelaide show etc. It's pretty easy to get around, and no-where is really far away really when you think of how big the state is.

The housing is cheaper here, but it is rising in price pretty fast. Not sure how the nurses wages compare between here and Brissie, some say they are a lot lower, but looking at my OH's job the other day (sparky) we could get maybe $5k more in Brissie but our mortgage and living costs would go up by at least $15k so all in all we're better off here.

Thing is though, don't tell everyone as I like Adelaide how it is and don't want too many people moving here.

If you speak with S/Nurse she's in Adelaide (and is obviously a nurse )

all the adelaide nurses are having too much of a good time to be on here lately!!!
only joking,

id spent a week in adelaide about 13 years ago when i was backpacking, and to be honest had the same opinion but having been there last year, this time with kids in tow we were very pleasantly surprised. like wendy said, its very easy to get around, driving is a dream (we did a couple of thousand k's in the 2 weeks we were there!!) and from memory most nurses who head to adelaide have no problems with the job. when we were there in may last year we kept an eye on the local newspapers, and there were literally hundreds of nursing jobs going ... 10 pages of jobs in the state papers, with lots based in and around adelaide.

nurselindsy is in adelaide, her and her hubby are both nurses who im sure would offer you their opinion if you asked them!

good luck

Talk of the devil..................

Please don't tell everyone but Adelaide is a great place to live/work. We try to keep it to ourselves as we fear being over taken by immigrants
Check out the posts regarding nursing in Oz and you will see that there a few differences.
A lot of places offer family friendly hours, wages are good and nearly on par with other states, particulary in the public sector.

Watched it myself sitting here on Costa del sol, just back from Brisbane visiting family there one of whom is a nurse, its very humid and wet there much more rain than Adelaide and a little more expensive, Adelaide looks a better bet to me the weather is almost identical to Costa del Sol.
What a lovely place Oz is and the people very helpful and friendly, just as you would like Britain to be but without all the crap with better weather clean and civilised, I would live ther tommorrow if possible, went to look at some caravans whilst there and both the salesmen just wanted to talk about anything else except trying to sell me a caravan.
Go for it

Hey guys, thanks for all your responses so far... quite interesting.. I mean I missed out Adelaide like I said cos a lot of backpackers would give it a miss but then backpacking is a holiday not a lifestyle choice so why would a backpacker go to Adelaide..

I've done my backpacking and its time for me and the other half to settle down somewhere that is good in climate and can be tranquil yet still have that choice of a nightlife and a bit of buzz.. (we're early 30's, so the knitting and pipe/slippers are still a ways away!) Can Adelaide offer that?

Plus as you know my oh is the breadwinner and a nurse.. I'm from the business/office sector..what are job prospects like out there for someone without a trade (ie me!) Does Adelaide have a good CBD? My dream is to get settled (doing an office role of sorts to bring in some cash first) do a fitness qualification and get a personal training business going. Aussies are so much more fitness minded than us here in the UK and the need for a fitness instructor/personal trainer here is not exactly is demand by us 'lose 20Ib in 1 week/quick fix' brits, who think losing that weight is all in the watching of a celeb weightloss dvd (who probably got a stomach staple anyhow!)

I must admit from what I heard and seen so far I am considering Adelaide..

Tis growing on me...

Oh before i forget Jacqui (s/nurse)...how do the wages in Adelaide for a nurse compare to Brisbane? When you say about the same... enough not to notice a difference between eating and not eating this week?

My son lived there for a few years........couldn't wait to return to Brisbane.

Many migrants use it as a stepping stone to the rest of Australia as visas for SA are easier to obtain.

They move on as soon as they can.

It is not to everyone's taste.

Well I'm in my 30's (only 18 in my head though ) and I think Adelaide's CBD nightlife is great. There's resteraunts, bars, cafe's, nightclubs, the casino (which isn't just a casino it also has bars and clubs in there) all in the city. So for me, it has a little bit of everything depending on what mood I'm in. If I'm just in a 'quiet' drink mood, then I'll just go to my local for a few hours. Mostly though we'll have BBQ's or get togethers with friends and family.

Office work - there's loads of it. I'm in that line of work and there's at least 3 new jobs every day. Most are permanent but if you do temp work for one of the agencies you'll get paid more so that might be worth considering, especially if you want to re-train as it will give you some flexibility. Take a look on www.seek.com.au for an idea of jobs here.

Good luck with your decision

I work as a clinical educator and get paid exactly the same as my friend in Brisbane who does the same.
I am under the impression that the public sector recently had a pay rise, I will try to find what the exact rates are for RN's.I am positive that you will be at least able to afford bread and milk for the week

Yes but your posts are ALWAYS negative about Adelaide, if I am right you have never actually lived here just had a son who hated it! Thats just ONE expat out of 1000's!! Always good to get a cross section of opinions BUT gets boring when it is always the same person offering the same one!!
