Default School/Community Public Health Nurse - Australia

Hi Genorm

I wonder if you can help as I am a little confused about my role in the UK and if you have the same in Australia. I have a BSc honours degree in adult nursing and have just completed a post graduate diploma as a specialist community public health nurse as well as the non medical prescribing qualification. I am a school nurse in the UK. Do you have school nurses in Australia and would my qualifications be recognised over there. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you

Shelly

Hi Shelly,

Unfortunately, I don't think the role of "School Nurse" is something that Australian employers are seeking from overas trained nurses, as generally, they are not permanent positions in Oz. Also, many School Nurses are ENs or EENs, not RNs. I have had a look around, and there are certainly no current opportunites with sponsorship.

As with everything thse days, it's about Supply and Demand, and what is available at the time you apply for a position. One question is: where are you at with your Australian registration, as not too many hospitals will offer a position without it. Current circumstances throw too many negatives for O/S trained nurses without Registration - not least of which is the time it is currently taking for AHPRA to process new applications.

On the other hand, it does appear from your post that you have skills/qualifications other than being a School Nurse - and often, when moving to another country, it's a matter of taking something that you can do, then work towards something that you REALLY want.

Another question is which Visa you are planning on applying for? Some visas are quite quick to obtain, ie, some meployer sponsored visas are being completed within 6-8 weeks of application. Regional sponsored visas take about the same time, whilst a PR visa (Independent) can take up to 9 months, sometimes even longer.

If you would like to email your CV to me at the address below, together with answers to the other points re registration and visa, I will assess what MAY currently be available.

Hope this helps.
