I qualify in December this year and then will probably get my NMC pin around March 2009. When do you suggest I start emailing the hopsitals for a post grad job? Also I know I will have to travel on a subclass 457 visa but do I need to sort this out myself or does the company? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would start applying now. You will most likely need to get on the graduate program in order to work as a newly qualified, and i think the applications close in July this year in order to begin in early 2009, although that may be different for overseas applicants. The best thing to do would be to email some hospitals in the area you're looking to work in, and ask their advice. I'm not very sure about visas, but I think once you get accepted, you can then apply for your visa. i think you apply for the visa yourself, but the hospital will give you support and provide info about you job offer to the immigration department. But, don't quote me on that!

I agree with claz, you should think about where you'd like to work and email those hospitals now.
As far as visas goes your only option is the 457 and the hospital will have to sponsor you, you can't apply for the visa until you have a TRN number from them.
I also came as newly qualified on a 457, I'm doing the grad program in operating theatres. I emailed hospitals in July/August 06 had an interview in Sept 06, qualified in Feb 07 applied for visa, NMC, QNC etc and started work in Aus in July 07.

I would concentrate on contacting hospitals directly and avoid agencies if you can.
