Just to clarify are you saying that quickest way in to Australia for a nurse is to apply to the state direct for an assessment and then when that has been done submit your Visa App.?
My wife is a nurse and we are busy getting transcripts of courses etc to send off to the ANC. This it appears would be unnecessary. We are at the moment planning on SA to live.
Appreciate your thoughts

If you are migrating on your wife's skills then you will need a skills assessment by the ANC.
If you are already registered in a state then you will only have to do a modified, cheaper ANC assessment. You have to register with a state in order to practice anyway. You do not register with the ANC.
If you are not migrating on your wife's skills then you do not need to go through the ANC at all.
My suggestion would be to register in SA first
http://www.nursesboard.sa.gov.au
When you have registered then do the modified ANC assessment. This is far cheaper than going to the ANC first.
The process is just as quick in other's experience and may be simpler.

We would be applying on my wife's skills, so.................from what you say, my wife could register with the SA state and once done, do a modified ANC assessment.
We will probably attempt entry on the General Skills Migration State Nominated Independent Visa (137) which if I understand correctly means that we would have register with the SA first anyway.
Hope I have understtod correctly.

Have just looked at the SA website that you kindly pointed out to me. Its says "Applications for registration or enrolment from overseas educated nurses who are migrating on a Skills Stream are assessed for equivalence of standard by the ANC on behalf of the Department of Immigration.
After completion of your assessment you will need to request the ANC to forward your file to the Nurses Board (ie SA Nursing Board)."
This to my simple mind seems to be saying that the route is ANC and then the state which appears to be different to what I thought you said above. Aaaaaaaaagh!

This process is very vague on the websites. If you look at the ANC website you will see that there is a modified skills assessment for nurses who are already registered.
I registered in NSW and QLD and have never been near the ANC because I did not need the points.
Nurses working on temporary visas do not need to go through the ANC either as they register in the state.
As I said if you are registered in a state the ANC allow you to do a modified assessment in order to have your skills assessed.
It is up to you how you do it but several on here have gone through the state first and have found it cheaper that way.
It can be done either way.
Registering to practice in a state is an entirely separate process from migration.
All the ANC are doing is confirming to DIMIA that you are qualified and have the necessary skills to meet the migration criteria.
You still have to meet the states own criteria for registration. The order in which you do it is your choice. It is just cheaper to do it the way I am suggesting.
Good luck

Go to the ANC website and click on 'overseas Assessment'. Then look at the 'Modified Assessment form' section.
This will tell you that if you are registered to practice in a state then you just need the modified assessment.
Good luck

From advice on this forum I registered with Queensland first and then did a modified assessment as Grayling suggested
It was cheaper and easier the Queensland forms were straight forward and it was done and back to me in 10 days
I have received my ANC skills back and it was all fine took 8wks though!!!!

I sent mine off to the Nursing Board of SA 9 weeks ago, I'm still waiting for its return.
Will then send off to ANC for modified assessment, I hope that doesn't take 8 weeks as well, or we'll never get there!!!!

Hi Richard,
Yep I'm getting quite fed up with the waiting now, but there is nothing i can do about it, so I'll just have to wait.
They definitely still want nurses in SA, went to the show at York last weekend and the general opinion was that there should be no problem getting the visa.
We are hoping to settle around Adelaide, not sure where, but have ben looking at the suburbs to the west and south of the city. I am currently trying to get info from schools to help us make the decision.
I currently work on a surgical ward in the UK, so hope to do this once we get to Aus.
We only have 115 points at the moment, so will either go for STNI or pay the $100.000 bond.

Have you checked with the SA board to see if there is a problem?
I recently renewed my NSW registration (which had lapsed) and received it back within a couple of weeks.
Sounds like yours is taking too long.
Best wishes

Hiya Lisa
Are you going to front load???? My meds took 2 wks to book and then have to wait over a week for bloods!!!
My police checks have taken 3 wks so far!!! Hubbies came back within a week Why?????
If I had my time again would do it all prior to ANC back so it was all ready to go!!!
Police checks say it can take 40 days and if no reply they might ask you to apply again!!!
So I'm waiting for blood results and Police checks DIMIA application is all ready!!!
Hope it only takes a couple of months!

I have to do bond too!

We are in the same boat (well, I wish I was on the boat to Oz but...). We may have to pay the bond. We are favouring Adelaide though haven't got as far as you in selecting a suburb. Have you been before? We have not even been to Oz.
My wife is a practice nurse and aim is to try and avoid going back to the hospitals if she can help it - though beggars cant be choosers.

Hi Nikki,
When you say front load what do you mean exactly? We havent sent anything off to Oz yet but obviously would like to do anything that will speed up the process. Are you referring to docs sent with the visa application or to the SA Nurse Registration Board. Appreciate any clarification you can give.
Incidentally,I have had a police check back (from the Met) and it took just two weeks.

I would do as Nikki says, and frontload your application. Advised at the York seminar last May to get meds and police checks done whilst waiting for ANC assessment (modified as I already had registered with NSW).
As soon as assessment arrived, we were ready to go and everything went off together to ASPC.
Good Luck, the waiting around is the easy bit looking back now!!!
