Hi,
I currently live in the Uk & work as a level 7 paediatric nurse ( total of 18 years experience in paediatrics). I have been offered a job in Australia & today received an email outlining the post. The position offered is that of a 'nursing officer, level 1, year 1 (but it states that this will be reviewed once my statements of service have been reviewed).
There has been some previous confusion regarding the pay....so does anyone know the approximate wage I should be earning??? (the post is in Brisbane)
To date I haven't decided whether to accept, mailnly based on our current finacial status (house to sell!!).
Thanks & look forward to your replies.

If it is then I would look for something else if I were you.....especially if they are only offering a 457 visa?
If you have PR there are plenty of jobs around.

Oh dear...why do I have the feeling this is going to get complicated! At the interview they offered me a level 2 nursing job, not sure why the outline states level 1. I was unsure as the 'nursing officer' title threw me, I wasn't sure if it was on par with the UK's modern matrons. Sigh....from a band 7 to a basic wage.....not getting good vibes! Oh well I'll contact them to double check the offer.

the 457 visa is sometimes (often?) used to get nurses on the cheap and to fill unpopular positions.....it effectively ties you to the employer...like it or not.
Get PR and then find yourself a decent job....there are plenty about.

I did tell them at the interview that I would be wanting a PR! Maybe it didn't go down to well
hence the changing job offer. :curse:

Once people are hooked into the idea of moving sometimes common sense goes out of the window.
It is easy for a nurse to get PR and you can then apply for any job you like....they know this so need a way of stopping you leaving....which a 457 visa effectively does.
Be careful

Hi Level 1 year 1 is a new grad pay scale. Once your statement of service is taken into account you will be paid level 1 year 7 which is $31.43 per hour.
In my experience I find that initially QLD health are not keen to offer oversea's nurses anything other than Level 1 position. There are positions come up if you want promotion once here.
One piece of advice I would give is if you qualify for a skilled visa, apply for one. Nursing is so different here, it allows you to choose/decide where you will work.
Hope this helps

I moved from a band 7 top increment to a level 1 increment 7 and reckon that if you take into account what the dollar buys as opposed to the pound I am about the same. They took into account my level of service (14 years at band 7) even tho I was moving into a different speciality.
No hassle of being in charge, no calls on days off!
FAB!

I have emailed the hospital and queried the employment offer. It's just such a hard decision to make ~ as I'm sure many of you know! Swinging from'wow, what a fantastic but unexpected opportunity...we'd be mad to not go' to ' how on earth can we make this work!'.

I would get PR if i were you and forget the sponsorship route. If you are waiting for your house to sell then you have probably got plenty of time!!
I came over here with PR and a job offer.Perfect you might think? The place where i worked was a nightmare and without going into too much detail i left 8 weeks later. If i had been tied into a contract i dont know what i would have done.I was so unhappy.
Like others have said PR is the best way to go without a doubt.Nursing is so different over here.At least you have the flexibility with PR to do as you please and jobs are plentiful.
I am 20 years post reg and went straight on to level 1 year 8 pay level.I am now casual and earn $40 an hour so not bad.
Hope this helps.

Ask for what you want.
I had been qualified for 3 years when we arrived (PR) I was employed as an RN 1 level 9. I refused their first offer of RN1 Level 5.

Just a quick update ~ I have now received confirmation from the hospital stating that the job offer was infact for a Nursing Officer level 2, year 1 ( year to be confirmed on review of formal statements of service). Can anyone recommend a good site to confirm the payscales for such a post?? Many thanks x
