A & E Brisbane hospitals
Hi there
We are going to Australia on my OH skills on 136 but I am looking at working when I get there. Working as Band 7 Emergency Nurse Practitioner in London at present.
I am just wandering if anyone out there has worked in the ED or is it ER out there in Brisbane. I know it is very different from over here and I am probably going to feel strange as I will not be able to do all my specialist stuff.
This I don't mind as long as it is different from the UK as far as overnight stays are concerned and violence and aggression which is why I trained as an ENP in the first place.
The move to Aus is not a career one for me but would be nice to enjoy my job. I used to love A&E in the UK which is what I have done for last 18 years. I understand that the ENP role is just coming in over there but that they are trained at Masters level. My training would not be recognised but I would love to teach the clinical skills stuff which might be an avenue down the road. When my kids get older I would love to study again and possibly re gain my ENP post in Aus.
Would be interested in anyones experiences of ED?

although I have never worked in ED here, i am working as community nurse with a private community nursing organisation. In UK i worked as G grade in a walk-in centre, so therefore worked in high profile autonomous role as you do. I have to say i was aware that nursing here was 'behind' england considerably and thought this wouldnt bother me too much, but i was wrong, it frustrates me to DEATH. community nursing isnt recognised at all, as a speciality area as it is in UK, we dont have much autonomy/professionalism here and primary care in general isnt recongnised??? hospital nursing on the other hand is! and nurse practitioners are just coming in, (but no where near community) you will have skills and recognised qualifications to probably be able to undertake NP masters once you get into working within ED. Im looking at further training????dunno what yet, but i know i cant stay doing this for much longer, we've been in brisbane for 18 months, when are you coming over???

Hi there Joanne
Thank you so much for answering my question was beginning to wander if anyone was out there!
I am sure in a sense I will find it frustrating my friend is in Perth and she was a Band 7 in Uk and an ENP and they won't even let her triage. Something that we had done away with in favour of treatment initiation at the London. I have worked agency in a few walk in centres too.
We are hoping to be over in Feb 08 as we hope to get visa by Dec.
We are looking at Joyner, Warner, Bray Park as trying to get kids enrolled at school in Bray Park. I have friend who works in Midwifery at the womens royal, I was also looking to write to Redcliffe ED nurse manager as they have ENP's but I am sure they will not let me practise. Also thinking about teaching in uni at some point. My mate the midwife does part clinical/ part teaching and she never did her degree. We trained in 86 so old school. Do you think it would be easy to get enrolled on the Masters course, my mate seems to think I would be alright but like her my ENP module was Level 3 but never finished the degree.
Where is Springwood?
Apart from the job frustration do you like your new life, do you have kids and I understand that they are not very child friendly with working. seems they have a lot of catching up to do. Would you say it has lived up to your expectations? Sorry for being nosy.
I am hoping that they will recognise and promote quite quickly, I expect ED nurses are the same everywhere - not quiet or meek.
Lovely to hear from you and thanks for answering.
Have a nice day.
