Yay... we have a home in Whitby... a few questions please
Good news... We have a gorgeous home to move into on 9th April. Kids are meeting their new principle at Adventure School tomorrow and things are going well so far.
As we're renting initially may i ask the following:
What gas or electric companies are there and can i choose my supplier?
Internet and TV providers who are they and are they all good (Something where i can watch East enders would be good)
Where do most people get their homewares, fridges and furniture from. Is there a type or argos/ikea /dunelm place?
Cheers. any other useful info would be gratefully received .

Congratulations. Good luck in your new home.
Contact the connection company Fast Connect. Look them up on the internet. They will get you connected to electricity, gas, Sky etc. Their service is free, yes really. Just pick your provider and tell them, the yellow pages is a good place to start. Yes, really. It's a bit eaney, meaney, miney, mo with regard to providers.
Our gas and electric provider is 'Contact'. There's other energy providers e.g. Genesis energy. We have Sky t.v. Our phone and broadband is Vodafone. They all send their bills regularly, just like the utility companies do in Britain. There's no separate water rates here in NZ, it's all part of the rates.
A quick thinking energy provider may send you a marketing promo as they've sussed that there's a new owner of the house. We got a Genesis Energy tea towel to encourage us to get our gas & electricity from them.
Harvey Norman is a good shop for furniture and electricals. Briscoes is good for kitchenware, sheets, towels, blankets, glasses etc etc etc.
Warehouse is like all the non-food departments of Tesco.
Bed, Bath and Beyond is good for sheets, towels, blankets, pyjamas, clocks.
Mitre 10 is a D.I.Y. superstore but they have homewares too.
I feel a song coming on. 'Welcome home.....welcome......come on in and close the door.'

great glad you got it sorted. few BE members round and about you there, so when you are in and a bit more settled let me know and we can arrange a meet up.
100% Newbolds in Upper Hutt are brilliant and extremely helpful even if the staff are a bit mad. Allowed to say that as know the owner and some of the staff. They sell electronics and whiteware.
as for utilities they are basically the same, see what they have atm and then check if it is cost affective

Eastenders is on uktv every evening at 6.55. We are a few weeks behind though, just had mick & L's engagement party. We have sky via Vodafone, a package which includes home phone and internet, not any cheaper though.
We are just round the corner from you in Papakowhai so happy to meet for coffee and as MrsF says always happy for a get together
Ps never buy anything from briscoes and most of the other stores unless they have a sale on, usually one day each week, lol
Welcome

What's My Number for power switching/deal info.
The guy I spoke to at the Electricity Authority (we support their IT) says the smart electric meters give the best deal at the moment as they charge spot price, so if you set washers etc to go overnight it costs way less.
We use Nova for gas
Slingshot internet have a free thing they call Global Mode that lets you get to UK and US services like iPlayer and Netflix
Also when buying stuff, look at PriceSpy - Shopping intelligence for info on how much everyone is selling things for. There's a phone app too so you can use it in shops as a bargaining tool.

If you want Ikea, you'll need to go on holiday to Oz

Get yourself into Porirua and look around for homewares. its not a rich area so there are some reasonable shops around although quality may not be the highest. Harvey Norman has lots of decent looking furniture but well overpriced so negotiate a large discount. Always ask for discounts on big ticket items such as Tvs and furniture and be prepared to walk away and try somewhere else
