WOODFIRE CHECKS
It will soon be that time again to get the wood in and what to use, is your fire ready ??
Check your flue is clean, only burn dry and seasoned wood, light your fire with those blocks of fire lighters and some kindling, DO NOT burn newspaper, it blocks your flue up, when starting your fire, leave the door ajar a few mm as this lets air flow in and gets it going quicker.
Check your door shuts tightly, any gaps will result in more air getting in and fuel will burn quicker, check door rope, and glass seals, make sure your top baffle is in one piece, you can replace some with cast iron sheet, as it lasts longer than the white promt ones, make sure your side and rear fire bricks are ingood condition, as these hold in heat and protect fire box.
Make sure the flue where it goes into the top of the fire has no gaps in it, seal it with fire cement, get a heat shield for the flue to reflect heat thats lost up flue.
If you have an inbuilt fire in the wall, take off the fascia and see if the area around the fire box has been insulated with flame retardant batts (yellow) tyope, this helps get around another 40% heat back into the room and not up the chimney.
Firewood
Macrocarpa, blue gum and Oak ect burn like coal, mix with softwoods, like Old man pine, and late eve before you go to bed get a good ammount of Hardwood on, get it well alight and shut fore down and it will burn for hours.
If any one has any questions about wood fires please mail me, as i have service and fitted hundreds, if you burn seasoned and dry firewood, you shouldnt need to clean your flue every year, burn smal hotter fiers do not cram your fire box with loads of wood, always place logs length ways from front to back, never side ways as not much air gets arouns logs.
