Question Wifi / Laptops

This may sound like I know what I'm talking about but really I havn't got a clue!
Hope that someone out there can help!.......we are planning on buying a laptop to bring over and have been told/advised to check if NZ wifi is 802.11 a, b, or g ???
Basically I think this means will a UK laptop pick up a signal on NZ wifi?

Any advice re Dell laptops bought in UK for use in NZ gratefully received!

Many thanks B x

We have a Compaq laptop and it says that it has a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN and I currently live in NZ and I am using wireless. Broadcom is just the manufacturer. We purchased our laptop in the UK and we have had no problems with it picking up wireless.

I am sure one of the techies will be along shortly and will give you more of an indepth answer. Hope this helps

Hi Barb

LOL...wow you sound like a technology dude..

No problems with running UK laptops here. We brought 4 over with us...yes I know its a lot All different ages and manufacturers

There is not that much difference in price over here. Why not wait till you get here and get one. My son bought me an acer notebook just before we came out. Exact model same price here.

Hi all, Thanks v much for taking the time to reply to what may have seemed an odd ?? , I understood that uk laptop would work ok in nz but was advised to check out the wifi thingy so its reassuring to hear that you're all connecting ok with UK machines! guess the 802.11 a,b or g thing is same.

Not really a techie Maria....was just asking what I'd been told to not a bloody clue really thats why we will probably buy here....so DS can give us lessons and make sure we know how to use it!! going to check out prices / guarantee etc tomorrow, may delay till we in NZ....but may need help!lol

My OH (an IT bod) tells me that 802.11 (x) is an international standard and not specific to any one country

Hi Tina,

I just tried to send you a private message but you have it turned off or something. We are all doing fabulous and the last 8 weeks have passed in a blur. We have achieved so much in a very short space of time.

It is so lovely to move from the winter into the summer here and waking up to sunny days is fab. Having said this it was raining this morning, but I smiled as it made a welcome change. Garden needs it too!

Working and gardeing has seriously curtailed my BE input but I am still about and very happy.

18 days...wow, they will go so fast. I know this is a sad time for you....saying goodbyes etc. Just remember when having the wobbles....it is all worth it as long as you have realistic expectations and are prepared to work hard.

Where are you hoping to settle, it would be nice if it is near us

Take care and get as much sleep as you can xx
