Default What's Rodney like?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what the Gulf Harbour area of Rodney is like please in terms of schools, shops and life generally? Also what would the commute into Auckland CBD be like (other than ghastly!)

Thanks

Hiya

I have no personal experience of the Gulf Harbour but I do know you can get the ferry from there to the CBD which takes approx. an hour. To drive though... There is only one road in and out of the peninsula, so add on the thousands of people trying to get off it every morning and back on every evening! I only know of one school that far down and it's a private school, there are a few towards Manly way though which are meant to be good.

Be careful of the leaky homes thing there too, apparently it's rife throughout Gulf Harbour It is lovely though, some spectacular views

Hi Rock Ape,

I live in Gulf Harbour & me & Mrs V love it. Fisherman's Cove is great for fishing from the rocks or Kayaks. Shakespear regional park is a short drive away & has a lovely beach at Te Haruhi bay, there are lots of great walks & you can go biking there too.

There are a couple of bars/restaurants in GH. Pacific Bar & Carpe Diem (owned by a couple), do some nice food there but can be expensive compared to Neptune's next door. Wednesday night is quiz night at Neptunes. Lots of fun, run by a scouser called Fran. It's not very serious but winning team gets $50 bar voucher & $25 for the runners up. We then have a game of "Play Your Cards Right".
There's another place further down the Marina called Ripples which does Fush n chups but we think it's crap!
A new dairy has just opened up on GH Drive which is very good, there will be a hairdressers & 4 more shops.

Not very good on schools as our boy Pick'n'mix is in his 20's & doesn't live in NZ.
There's Gulf Harbour school which has excellent facilities though I've heard mixed reports on the standards there, our friends' kids seem very happy & appear to be doing well. There's a private school, Wentworth College which has a good reputation. They have built a primary school next door as well. Don't know if that is running yet.

There are two golf courses in GH. Gulf Harbour Country Club (currently in receivership) & Whangaparaoa GC - the cheaper & friendlier option.

The ferry from GH is run by 360 Discovery. It runs at 7 & 7.30 am to AKL & takes 50 mins, returns at 4.40 & 5.35 pm. Great way to travel, often have a beer on the way home on a friday. Free parking at the ferry terminal in GH. Ferry is also a great way to meet people & make friends.
Journey by car into the city can take from 40mins to an hour & 15 depending on what time you leave. Where you live & work in Auckland does entail a compromise. We chose to have a long commute time but at least we feel like we are on holiday when we are at home.

If you decide to buy in GH, do make sure that you have all the surveys done. We also mentioned it to every real estate agent we met & told them we'd sue if the sold us a leaky home!!!
