Pigs intestines. I've never heard of them in Britain. I thought, 'chitlins' were eaten in the Carolinas, USA.

Here's more info, which says they were in an English cookery book in 1743.

I live in that area, but the only time I ever ate chitterlings was at a restaurant in London.

The two things are connected. Did you never wonder where the yeast that is used to make Marmite, which is a "yeast extract", comes from?

Erm... I have a degree in Home Economics & am very well aware of where the yeast comes from. There were a few bakeries in the town too. All connected I know. Thank you for teaching me to suck eggs

I have a ham radio licence, you're not my grandmother and I don't give two hoots whether you can suck eggs or not, but you didn't point out the connection, and you're not the only reader of this thread.

The fact that Marmite is "reprocessed industrial waste" (and I do like the stuff myself ), is often not known, and I saw someone on another (non-BE) forum within the past week describe Marmite as a "vegetable extract"!

Apologies, I assumed that others were intelligent enough to know the connection & therefore I didn't need to point it out. But "Heigh ho, the wind and the rain!" (That's a quote from Shakespeare's King Lear BTW ). I guess I need to write everything to suit the lowest common denominator in future.

This is just a light-hearted thread, no need to get upset

Sounds like they had their "mites" mixed up. Vegemite is from Vegetable extract.

Nope, Vegemite is substantially the same as Marmite, with reprocessed brewers yeast being the largest ingredient by far, with a few vegetable and spice flavourings.
