Vans
Why are vans so expensive in NZ? I have noticed the vast majority are Totyota Hiace and that some main dealers do not import vans eg. Renault, but I still cannot understand the lack of depreciation of vans here.
1995 Hiace are going for several thousand dollars. 2002 Transit vans are going for 15- 20k. This is 3 times the price of vans sold in the UK.
Can somone explain this to me?
Cheers

Re: Vans
Vans are in great demand. Many Kiwi's are self employed, so a van is a necessity. Also, many people use them for backpacker camper vans and then there's the fact that new vans are also very expensive. If the new stuff costs a lot, then so will the 2nd hand ones......
If you're looking to buy one, stick with Japanese. European cars and vans are not cheap when they go wrong. Parts are scarce and expensive....there's a plentiful supply of Jap motors for breaking and new parts are well stocked.

Vehicles just don't appreciate much here. Probably vans even less because even fewer people care about a slightly scruffy van than a slightly scruffy car.
You could turn the question on its head and ask why vehicles depreciate so fast in UK, and why so many Brits are happy shelling out thousands per year on depreciation, just so they can have a shiny little car on their driveway. The only ones gaining from that system are the car manufacturers

Perphaps the problem is with the GB market and not NZ, never thought about it like that.
Good comments and it's a good job I don't like new cars.
