The counter signature for the pictures or the passport renewal should be a UK citizen of note i.e. a JoP, doctor etc. If you don't know one of those, which we do not here in NZ, then an NZ citizen will equally fit the bill as has been proven.

Applying for a UK passport in New Zealand

From 1 March 2010 all New Zealand applications sent directly to the British High Commission will be returned. This also applies to applications made in person in Wellington or at any other British Consulate in New Zealand.
You should apply at least 6 weeks before travel. We aim to get your passport back to you within 3-4 weeks, but this does not take into account any possible delays in the postage courier system.
Simple guide to applying for or renewing a UK passport:
  1. Download and print out the application form and the passport fee sheet [PDF 166KB, opens in new window]
  2. Download and print out the relevant checklist
  3. Prepare the documents to support your application. See our guide to supporting documents [PDF 512KB, opens in new window]
  4. Enclose two identical passport photographs, taken within the last month
  5. Lodge your application with New Zealand Post.
Our internal target is to process straight forward (renewal) applications within 10 working days. However, most first time applications are delayed due to incorrect documents or badly completed forms. In some cases this can cause delays of up to 2-3 months, so it is important that you read the relevant checklist carefullyFor information on

Really. If you all know all that , then the contradictory links won't bother you any.

For those that don't know all that, then the actual info, as it happened to one Brit Expat wanting to renew a UK passport might just be useful.

Sorry but this is incorrect, the countersignatory must be a citizen of a commonwealth country, eg Australia, NZ, Canada, UK.

A child application must have a countersignatory for 2 reasons.
1. as all ready pointed out, a childs appearance does change a lot in 5 years
2. sadly, child obduction is increasing and so this step is put in place to try and help procect the identity of the child.

Hope this clears things up

......

True enough and sometimes you can be required to submit a letter from your partner to confirm that they consent to the application for a child renewal.
We did for our earlier renewal - about 12 to 18 months ago, before the Post Shop service existed.
Also don't try to take the forms to the Post Shop on behalf of the applicant (unless they are a child) - I was turned away and told that MrsL had to go in herself with her form, etc.
Ours came back a week ago about 2-3 weeks after the application.

NB - when I went to the NZ Immigration office to get the residence permit transferred in MrsL's new passport they asked me when we were travelling......which I thought was odd, maybe NZ Immigration exchange information with the UK authorities......???

Data protection forbids the sharing of information, It was most likley to see if you booked travel on a permit that was about to be transfered. This often causes problems as the permit and passport number then do not match, with what was used at the time of booking travel.

Not booked any travel on the permit as such. It's an IRRV and we've not left the country in the last 3.5 years. Did book the flights to the UK on the old passport though - do we need to sort that out with Air NZ?

Not sure whether the immigration officer KNEW that MrsL had put down the travel date on the UK passport application (or somewhere else) but when I told her the date she SEEMED to do a "mental tick".....
