Default UK nurses thinking of NZ

Just to let you know that from Jan 1st 2009, all applicants to the nurse council of NZ will have to undergo an english test. So if you are thinking of moving here put your registration in before then to avoid another test.

Is that to include people who's first language is english?

For a Scottish person Ben's English is 'pretty good' or so he says.

Ben is about to begin the 2nd year of his nursing degree.

Ha Ha i didn't see anything in the document mentioning which version of english, so his scottish should be fine!!!

Yes it includes you even if your first language is english.

So unfortunately for Ben, when he qualifies, it will mean another test for registration, Sorry!!

Does anyone know if this would include other hospital staff, my hubby is an aneasthetic technician in the hospital theatres and we are planning on moving to nz in two years time although he could apply for his registration earlier if need be to avoid the test. English is our first language but it would be nice to do one less thing, we will have enough to think about.

I believe this english test that is now being undertaken is in a direct result of the UK doing this for all immigrants regardless of where they come from

I think partly you're right, the NMC is to test everyone. I think the council here were under a lot of flak recently of discrimination too, especially over the pacific islands. So like the NMC, they're just gonna test everyone and the argument becomes mute.

Don't know about other hospital staff, worth contacting your registration body.
