Is there a need for a 'welcome to Christchurch' service?
With the large influx of new migrants into Christchurch, I've been thinking about the many issues when arriving in a new city. So my question is, would it be helpful to have a 'Welcome to Christchurch' service?
The service would be run by a charity with volunteers. I'm envisaging the service would include:
What it is not:
A recruitment service or job finding service
A Visa service
Not for profit
Questions:
1) Is there a need for such a service?
2) What other services could be provided to assist with the arrival in a new city? (e.g: help with transport or buying a car)
3) What would you be prepared to pay for this service?
The service would be run by a charity with volunteers. I'm envisaging the service would include:
- Before arrival, assistance with accommodation for the first week. (booked for you) Longer if needed. Cost of accommodation paid directly to hotel, motel, etc.
- Meet and greet at the airport.
- Transport to your accommodation.
- A friendly point of contact before and after arrival
- City map, and perhaps a hints & tips book

A recruitment service or job finding service
A Visa service
Not for profit

Not being rude but I cant see the need or the point of it.
if someone can get themselves here rom the other side of the world then they
are surely capable of booking a motel, hailing a taxi, picking up a free street map
and asking one or two questions.
Its an English speaking country with a friendly population, Its not difficult really is it !!
Your charging someone 200 bucks for things that are free.
Why do some treat coming here as equivalent to going to the moon

An acquaintance of mine tried this a while ago. She's not doing it now and hasn't been for a long time so I'm guessing it didn't work out.
