I've certainly had my moneys worth over the years.
We used to be in Denplan The difference being, when we both earned UK wages, we could afford it. You can take out a private insurance for dental care, but on NZ wages... could you afford it.
We hadn't had a check up here in NZ for 5 years & both only went cos we needed a filling My advise would be to ensure all your dental care is up to date before you move here, use an electric tooth brush & watch the sugar intake.

Also, just having your teeth cleaned - not that I have bothered for decades - but I was quoted 500+ dollars for that.
I don't really want to plough all of my savings into getting the family teeth done. In the UK, you can go NHS if you want cheap.
Short of flying to Vietnam, are there any cheaper options???
500 dollars for a clean must be an involved 'deep cleaning' for which you have local anaesthetic and maybe done in more than one session - not just your regular 6 monthly 30 mins with hygienist which even at a top end practice in Wellington would be no more than NZ$150 and probably less.

Under my health plan I get two free check ups a year each with a clean, scrape and fluoride treatment. But then I do live in Australia, I don't think there are similar health plans in New Zealand but I may be wrong?

There is talk of an NHS style system over here, but I can't see it happening unless Labor get back in at the next election.

Whatever you do don't go to Thailand or similar for dental treatment, I've heard some horror stories about people going there for implants that go horribly wrong.

Just did some price checking recently. All of these are in leafy Papakura in South Auckland:

Vanessa Wright Dental: Checkup/scale and polish/xrays: $165; fillings $150 - 200

Dental World: Scale and clean: $100, xrays $25 each; fillings $190 - 280

Smile Dental: Free check up, xray $35; fillings start at $180

Wellington Street: Exam only $41, Exam with xray $77, exam with scale/clean/xrays $164; fillings start from $100

I travel to Australia once a year, so I looked into this option too. I came across this site which gives and indication of fees on Oz:

http://www.smile.com.au/dental-denti...s-prices-costs

It is open to tourists and non residents. I don't know if this is the best option for Australia - it might be worth checking if you are going over anyway, but it doesn't look like it's worth a special trip.
