Taking Dogs
We have had a quote for taking our dog of over £3.5k, she is a german shepherd if this is the cost I think I may have a couple of upset kids and an upset wife but I am not paying that.
I could get the family 2 kids 2 adults to auckland from Glasgow first class for that.
Any cheaper thoughts would be appreciated?

Re: Taking Dogs
I brought my dog from Germany (Frankfurt) to Auckland 3 years ago. He is a westie (10kg) and the cost for the flight was around 800 Euro.
May be that helps.

Personally I would never allow finances to dictate my decision about my dog, remember you chose to have them join your life.

have a reliable guide book on moving to New Zealand. Granted it was writen 2 yrs ago, but they quoted about 600NZD for exporting a dog. Also if from the uk she wont have to be quarantiened just have a valid rabies jab, and be chipped. We are looking into migration, and also have a dog.....Im sure you will find the funds to take her anyway!!! I know my kids would never forgive me!!!!! GOOD LIUCK.

Your quote seems a lot. We shipped over our 2 cats and our dog (big labrador size) in October - we paid £2600 for all three of them.
But personally I agree with Ladylisa, we would have got the money from somewhere - if we couldnt have taken our dog we wouldnt have come.

Re: Taking Dogs
[QUOTE=ladylisa]Who is the quote from? Are you talking about an Airline or a specialist animal shipper, if the latter you can do all the paperwork yourself no need to pay the extra to a company who will only fill out the same paper work as you could do anyway.[QUOTE]
It was a specialist shipper, where do you get the paperwork for doing it all yourself? We have done everything else ourselves so don't know why we never thought of that with this.

Price of taking dog (size of collie/retriever) to Auckland out of London 2 yrs ago was £1320 plus about £300 in vets costs. My mum took him down to london for me to cut down on a. costs and b. stress to animal.
You dont need a valid rabies shot to take your dog into NZ and as you stated it dosent have to be quarantined. But, if you choose or have to come back again you will have to have the rabies shot done and apply for its pet passort takes about 7 months from start to finish, so best to get this started in the UK, also cheaper in the UK and when we were there NZ ran out of the serum. the initial vets checks and jabs at this end take about 6 weeks so you need to be well planned ahead.
We used Airpets and we know of people who used a company called Golden Arrow - however, recent post on uk 2 n z dosent say nice things about Golden Arrow Im afraid.
My advice would be leave the dog at home till you get settled and then see whats what, thats if you have a family member who will take them for you. OUrs stayed in Scotland for 7 weeks after we had left, this gave us enough time to get settled etc.
If we had to ever do this again we would leave our boy with family. Looking back we were very selfish in putting him through the flight etc. Dont get me wrong it would hurt like crazy but our poor boy went through the flight twice at a total cost of we reckon £4k. Saying that he was none the worse for wear apart from the jetlag.

Re: Taking Dogs
Also to add get a specialist shipper. They will diary all vets dates etc. If you are one date out and have one thing wrongly filled in or missed your pet is shipped back home - no arguments. Is it really worth it in order to save a few hundred $s. Sorry to also add you will also find that the specialist guys have the flights all booked up. The Cargo will only take up to 8 animals at a time, and try and go Air NZ via LAX better route for the animal.

Which carrier? Sounds like a fantastic price!!! Presumably you are talking one way and not return? I would have thought £3.5k would buy a maximum of one adult first class return since this is roughly what BA quoted us last year for our trip we just did at Xmas! In fact our traveller plus tickets were originally quoted at £1600 I seem to remember. It's all very expensive, but a lot cheaper than when I first flew in early '92.
Good luck with the dog. Carmen.
