suburban areas in Auckland
can anybody give me a feel for good suburban areas in Auckland?
By which I mean in terms of housing quality, shops being close by etc.

Hi there - I have not been here very long but so far have managed to suss out some nicer areas.
The east area is really nice but pricey...Glendowie, Kohimarama, Orakei, Mission Bay and its about 15/20 mins into the city. All these areas are close to both shops and beaches.
More central there's Parnell, Newmarket, Ponsonby and Mount Eden which are all nice and lots of shops too. I have heard that South Auckland can be a bit problematic for crime etc. West has some really good beaches too but again can be a way out of town.
Have a look on http://www.auckland-suburb-guide.co.nz/ for the low-down on areas in terms of location, sociio-economic factors. It really helped me when I was deciding where to rent (which is Orakei).
Good luck...

I guess it all depends on what you're looking for! However, like pp said, unless it's potential crime (hope I'm not offending anyone here!), I would steer clear of South Auckland. We liked the North Shore - Browns Bay and Takapuna, but pricey - up near Orewa and Red Beach was also nice.
In the end we went for the Eastern Suburbs and are currently in Botany Downs short term - long term looking at something like Cockle Bay, Howick or Maraetai Beach.

It really depends on where you'll be working, I've been renting in Cockle Bay out east and like previous poster says Howick area (Cockle Bay, Howick, Bucklands Beach) is quite pleasant. However it would be a nasty commute to central auckland.
Likewise there's plenty of good areas in the West too, don't enitirely rule out the South, Pokekohe seems a decent area. But again so much depends on where you are working as Auckland traffic is a nightmare, and public transport is dreadful in the main.

Hi we live in the West, it takes around 30-40 mins to drive into Auckland centre, there are plenty of malls around. Beaches 10-20 mins drive.
