Struggling to settle in Christchurch
Hi, my husband and I moved to Christchurch in November 2010. He is working for a roading consultancy and so rather busy at the moment. I'm getting more and more homesick. Would love to meet some people in and around the christchurch area. Also we are fortunate enough to have electricity and running water, so if anyone is in need of shower we have two fully functioning ones!

I know what you mean, we moved here from the UK in 2007 and found Christchurch albeit really friendly a rather colloquial place and pretty hard to from new friendships or break into existing circles, everybody here has grown up with everybody else and has known them from childhood it seems, but don't despair it will happen and usually through work you get to meet people.
We are out in rolly with a 5 year old daughter and a new puppy
Keep your chin up

Re: Struggling to settle in Christchurch
Hello All,
Thank you for your responses. I am trying to find work but this seems to be prooving more difficult than originally thought. My hubby is 40 and I am 30, we enjoy socialising, walking and kayaking, he likes english football and golf and I enjoy yoga and swimming. Would be great to hear from like minded local people perhaps for a meet up and a pint some time?!

I love the personality he has though, to be 75% Ridgeback which are bread for hunting lions and to be scared of the dark and rain and ....... well everything is fantastic makes him even cuter and he has a butch name too "Bronx" we didnt name him that , we got him from the SPCA ( on earthquake day 22nd Feb) and he was already named and seems to suit it so sticking with it

Hello Gemma. Understand what you're going through but try to stay with it.
We arrived in Chch just about a year ago. My wife is kiwi born but been suffering me for 30 years. She has a good job but like you I'm struggling to get work here. Like others have said, this place is pretty insular but once you get your nose in you will eventually be accepted. When I was your age we moved to Wellington and I really struggled to settle. For several reasons we went back. Can't say I totally regret that as we've had some great experiences in that time, however it has made life double hard now, as if we'd stayed we would be made by now. Also, if you have kids, life must be better here for them (once the e/quakes give it a rest). Don't know where you are but we're in Belfast area if you feel you need some old farts to talk to over a tipple or ten.
