sorry but what is it with adding "ie'

at the end of words to describe people.

lastest is a "boatie" describing a person who has fallen overboard in Wellington harbour

then you have "bikie" to describe members of bike gangs.

It is Kiwi style English. That is the thing with being a world language - people do weird things to it. You should see what people in Germany do to your language. I pity English speaking expats living there ;)

It's gone on for years, taken from the Australian need to pronounce everything with something at the end. Eskie, Wazza, Bazza, Jezza. It was the convicts way of communicating.

Bikie, boatie etc.

Obviously it became more advanced.

There is no hidden meaning nor ignorance behind it. Convict language is here to stay.

Have you read 'The deadly shore'? The most harrowing book I've ever read. I love reading, this was one of the best.

I do recommend "the deadly shore". Such a fascinating read. It shows the atrocities people went through.

He didn't laugh. He hated it.

ok seemed to have hit a nerve. sorry

the actual sentence "convict language is here to stay" made me laugh. I was just thinking of prison talk and nothing else.

Is it similar to the book, 'The Fatal Shore' ? I read the book, 'The Recruiting Officer' (both those books have the same author,) as an 'A' level text a few years ago at evening classes.

'The Fatal Shore' was read by someone in class who chose to read it as background reading, she said it was quite an eye opener.

Both books have examples of how shocked at the judgement and punishment the Ab Originies have of the 'Christians' back then.

The Ab Orginies had more idea regarding sun protection and insect repellent than the early settlers too.

Anyway :focus:

Also: Boardie for skateboarders. The list goes on and on.

It also used to get to me the letter 'a' or the phrase, 'eh' at the end of words i.e. Better phone the AA eh ?

Re: sorry but what is it with adding "ie'

It's an ancient Germanic diminutive suffix, indicating something is small.

Over the thousand-or-so years Old English has evolved into the modern English we speak today, we use it now along similar lines for endearment.

The kiwis especially have picked it up from Scots roots/Northern English where it's equally common (we also have boaties). Like Scots, Kiwis use "-ie" more than the Aussies who tend to add "-o" to words, like "arvo".

It's related to Dutch "-je" which they use the same way: a small "koek" (cake) is a "koekje" (cookie; where we get our word for it from).
