We never came on a recce - never could afford to and I think I might have been romanced by the holiday aspect too. It took me a good year of living here, spending our savings, to stop converting to pounds and seeing everything as cheap. Its not so cheap when you are earning dollars.

We were thrilled with the scenery, the adventure of it all, the welcome, the fun of exploring and feeling like this is the final frontier. The beaches, though there is nothing there but a beach usually, no ice creams and bucket stalls - the beaches are wonderful. Usually they are timber strewn and black sand near us, but the sea is like mint coloured turlish delight. It moves your soul to be there. We would go after school (only 15 min drive) and make driftwood forts on the good days in the winter - it was warmer to be there in the sun than at home!

Housing - we didnt do very well on. We bought a massive renovation job and we knew nothing of the damp winters ahead. But if we had known more we would have bought a smaller, easy to maintain, modern house with good insulation and good heating. There are houses being built now with double glazing too, so thinking about those things are important.

Crime isnt as bad in the UK, but there are quite a lot of gang issues here. I dont mean teens in hoodies walking the streets, I mean gangs like the biker gangs. They are mainly Maori based and having worked with a few, they can be very intimidating. Quite a lot of violence exists between them. I think there is more domestic violence here that contributes to the news worthy crimes such as murders etc. So you do have the dreadful newsworthy items like murders every so often, and they always struck me as being extreme cases - but they are usually perpetrated by family or someone known to the victim - if you see what I mean.

As for other crime, theft and so forth, I havent much experience of it. I would like to say that I have left my 1994 Surf unlocked wherever it is and as yet it still hasnt been stolen!!! It would save me selling it if it got stolen, burnt out or stripped for parts...............but no.

Schooling is great here (I only know about primary level though) and if you have kids they will love it here!

Less commercialism is great on the one hand, no need to keep up with the Jones's, but can wear thin after a while for some.

And a little issue for me was that Christmas has never felt festive here. Not much piped muzak in the shops, usually just a festive message written on shop windows and no-one makes that much of a fuss - its a day off and a good opportunity to go to the beach for many. But lots of people dont mind that.

I think it is difficult to understand how few people there are here and how the few dots on the map arent the major centres with villages inbetween like at home - they are it.

But it is a dream holiday destination for many, and you cant know unless you try! We said we would give it 2-4 years and then review it. It took me 2 years to feel like a local and around that time the thrill of the scenery and the beaches were starting to pale because my daily work was not as thrilling!! So real life is real life wherever you go.

And I think here, if you dont come with some substantial funds from a house sale so you can set yourself up with a house (mortgaged if needed, but large deposit to reduce payments) and some cars, I think it can be a struggle.

Also we brought over a 20 foot container if our stuff and it was worth it for us to do so. We would never have been able to afford to replace those things for the money it cost to ship them. Though we have bought more here and leave with a 40 foot container this time!!!

Keep asking and reading, and just keep remembering that everyone will like and dislike different things. Take what is worthwhile from people's comments and give the benefit of the doubt to stuff that doesnt work for you!

Good luck!!

Great posting Poppy2 karma for you

(Would you not hang on for 12 months though for your citizenship ??)

I did the should we, shouldn't we thro lots of 05, we moved in jan 06...and apart from a marriage split and the pain of that, have no regrets...the time difference for calls to the uk is confusing, and some members of the family still can't do it, but hey!! not a big deal really...
one piece of advice..try not to calculate in £...earning in $ makes that false hope/ecconomy! Most Kiwi's work hard and play hard..saturday sports with the kids is almost essential! Out in the Boonies, things are (supposed to be) about 20+yrs before UK..but here in Wellington, things are very urbane and civilised...great social prospects, good cafe life...
We couldn't do a reccie either, and came on spec..found a place to rent within 7 days, had car, hubby had job, (mine was secure before we left) school sorted...realy easy!
GO OR IT!!!

Good luck with Canada....
Hi Elsie
My wife and I came out here in 2005 and I was the same age then as ur OH is now...52

We were very fortunate that my wife had a stack of qualifications (and 12 years less in age than me) so we were able to PR very easily.

My adivice would be to try it. Again we were lucky that our children are all grown up and self sufficient. We had equity from our house in UK that loowed us to keep a small proerty in the UK as well as buying a new house here.

There are some problems over here but in comparison to the UK they are minimal. Where we are the weather is much better than the UK. Here we are int he middle of winter and the temp today was 17 degrees. Yes, it is pouring down tonight but certainly not like it did in the part of UK I am from!

We find that the salaries paid here are less than in the UK but the cost of living is also lower so it tends to balance itself out wuite a lot.

At 52 living in New zealand was on my list of 101 things to do ebfore you get too old to do them. Now it is crossed off and we are actually here doing it! We miss our children and grandchildren like mad but we do love living here. Will we go back to UK? ..... Maybe or if we are lucky enough then we will be able to do part of the year in each... Who know what the future holds ... we are just enjoying the present while we can...

But you'll never know unless you try! Loads of people love it so you may well be one of them...go for it (but maybe do a recce first)
By contrast we work half what we did in the UK..feel far safer, are more content and with everyone of the 25 months that have passed it just gets better. Mazi did not have children here however i think i am right in saying if she did she would NOT bring them up here. I have 3 little people and would NOT bring them up anywhere else. We feel they are kids here longer, have a great school to go to (one of the best in NZ apparently) we have endless things to do a wonderful house in a fantastic neighbourhood and it feels like home!!! Miss much of the UK but what I miss I can do without. Life here for us as a family is as good as it gets. Inspite of all NZ's problems. we had a cold, damp house..we got on and sorted it. It is now warm, snug and bone dry. NZ is a hugely alien place by contrats to the UK..you have to get here, get on with life and sort out the problems as they arise. There is NO subsitute for experience. You will either love it or hate it. One thing I would say is that make sure you are aware of your income and weekly outgoings...one thing I am very aware of and it is mentioned MANY MANY times is how skint people are. Personally I do not think this is the type of undertaking to be done on a shoe string..i have said it before..its a huge hurdle to jump this moving hemisphere lark....the LAST thing you need is to be in penury, 12000 miles from your best friends and rellies..MAKE SURE YOU CAN MAKE ENDS MEET>>>>>>>> with some spare!!

It sounds obvious but as I said avove lots of people post how skint they are. We chose to burn all our bridges and sell up lock stock and barrel, this afforded us some financial foundation for our new lives. For us I know it would not have been such a great success had we tried to keep that 'safety net' in the UK..of course for others who hate NZ that net was a Godsend!! You pays your money you makes your choice.

It would be interesting to know if people who did not sell up in the UK............had sold up...would they have had a better start and maybe their move might have worked better???
