Default Short Break in New Zealand

Hi,

Planning on taking a 4 day break with young family (2 and 4 year old) in New Zealand flying into Wellington, can anyone recommend places to visit within a 2 hour drive of wellington, want to see a few places but don't want to drive too far. Is it practical to visit for just four days ? Haven't got many holidays so going for a week isn't possible.

Thanks Anne - Marie

Suggest you consider crossing the straits, you can get to Nelson etc very easily.

Otherwise you MUST hire a car, will give you a lot more fun and only NZD40 a day, all-in, or so.

4 days is no where near long enough, we spent a month there and still didnt see have of the things. We found wellington really disappointing and spent a lot of time on south island, whale watching, seal swimming, dolphin swimming and many other fab things

Haven't spent much time in Wellington but if you go up the cable car from Lambden Quay you will find great views, nice cafe and beautiful gardens. If you follow the signs you will find a good play area there for the kids. There is a big museum in Wellington that is supposed to be kid friendly.

If you pop across to the SI on the ferry (they have kids play areas) you could drive down to Kaikoura if you think you would like to try a little whale-watching. There are two seal colonies there - watch the one just south of Kaikoura as you have to clambor over some slippery rocks and my 4yo injured his knee.

Nelson is lovely. Tahananui Beach is the city's main beach - we found it clean, and the kids like the play area alongside. The kids also liked the Founders Park which comprises Nelson's colonial buildings moved to the park along with a steam train, play area etc. There is an indoor play area with cafe (Chipmunks?) just off Nelson's main street - Trafalgar Street on Hardy Road, I think.

HTH.

I wouldnt miss Te Papa but not to sure if your kids at 2 & 4 would get a lot out of it. Wellington is a fun place to visit with so much to see & do. Check with The Visitors Information when you get there, no doubt they can offer you a lot of choices. Loads of places to see within a 2 hour driving range. Try looking up Wellington on the net to give you some ideas.
Incidentally where are you flying from....Im just asuming you are coming from Oz
have a wonderful 4 days!!
