Thanks for this. We had budgeted about £10k so good to know we were not too far off the mark. great price on your flights. Is that with Singapore Airlines? Also, what is the name of the hotel you are stopping at in Singapore? Just asking as we are thinking of flying with them and stopping over at least one night if not two when the time comes.

Hi there,

Yes Singapore... think it's called the York hotel. Not the most suave (unless you consider what you'd pay for the equivalent in the UK) but the only one with a kids swimming pool for our toddler. Depth important when you've got two kids and only two arms!!!!

You book through the Singapore Airlines website once you've booked your flights. Some great hotels at great prices. Believe that the Singapore Government may subsidise the rooms. Heard that rumour somewhere.

Hi Phyliss,

We came out via Singapore, a year after our one night stopover on holiday, so when emigrating we stayed for 2. Can't remember the name of the hotel, but we booked through last.minute.com and it was absolutely fine. Something on "Queens" I think...But no Singapore Sling ...

Oooo I was just thinking of this today watch my container ship dock in JAFAland, I put it about £5000. It was a guesstimate and there is just me, it will be interesting when I properly work it out. Not tonight, too much wine!!

I was the only one in our family that was/is the immigrant as Hubby a Kiwi and kids get citizenship by descent. We had 40 foot container, plus shipped out two biggish dogs, I think our costs were nearly double that £10,000. Don't tell "Him"

I often wish I had left the dogs & kids behind ... but apparently that's family?!

Expensive? Yes.
Worth it? Yes.
Do it again? Probably wouldn't bring the hounds.

Ours cost about £12500 3 years ago for a family of five, no pets, no cars to ship just a 40 footer. It aint cheap but a new life wouldn't be would it on the other side of the globe. By comparison my bro' spent £12500 in stamp duty alone to move from Essex to Devon. So in some ways it's cheap relative to a move in the UK!!!
