Satellite Broadband
Well here goes for my first post.
I'm due to arrive in Palmerston N. in 14 days time. My boss has kindly/desperately asked me to carry on working for him but I require a decent internet connection and the satellite stuff looks ok (www.wirelessnation.co.nz)
Does anybody have any experience of satellite broadband especially with regards to remote working/VPN to the UK?

Re: Satellite Broadband
VPN over satellite is never going to be much fun because of the latency usually around a second round trip.
It's usually also more expensive than land-line or even cellular
You'd probably be better off with a Telecom or Vodafone data card. Cost is approx $50 per month including 1GByte, then $10 per GByte over that. I would have though you'd get a good data rate (ie 350kbps or over) in Palmy

Re: Satellite Broadband
Thanks for that lapsed kiwi.
I'd previously thought that mobile broadband coverage was restricted to the main cities but see now that coverage should be ok for me.

Re: Satellite Broadband
Coverage is actually not bad even in semi-rural areas - and despite what some people say, Palmy is considered to be a main city
We use the Telecom mobile broadband service for work and are pleased with the results. It can be used for VOIP such as skype - not quite as good as ADSL due to a bit of jitter but still acceptable. Vodafone is probably just as good - I would check out the coverage and costs for where you are going to be and choose whatever is best, but there is probably not going to be much difference
