Anyone any tips on things to do or where to stay. Decided to break the journey up a little and will have a week here before our return to blighty.

Re: San Francisco
I've stayed a couple of times in Union Square at the Chancellor hotel. Small by American standards but a perfect base and very reasonable rates. So much to see and do in San Fran. Museums, cable car, Golden Gate bridge, Alcatraz, shopping, Fisherman's Wharf, great restaurants, and so much more. Have a look at www.tripadvisor.com for accommodation ideas and their travel forum for suggestions of how to plan your visit.

Here's a recommendation

Also outside of SF itself there are loads of excellent day trips - Napa and Sonoma valleys, Monterey for it's excellent aquarium.

If you want to visit Alcatraz I would recommend booking tickets in advance. I didn't realise this and all tickets were sold out when I arrived. You can still get tickets but it'll cost you hundreds of dollars. Our friends took a trip there and said it was well worth it and really enjoyed it. I would look at booking ahead by about 2 weeks at least.

We stayed at the Powell which is right by the cable turnaround. We found this a good location as could get the cable car or the trams to Fishermans wharf etc and walking distance from union square etc...we also stayed at the pickwick just round the corner but I much preferred the Powell.

Alcatraz is great, and I agree book online in advance, I think they sell tickets up to 90 days in advance. We did the night tour which was the best - done the day one a number of years ago - as it offered more talks and areas to see than the day one, like the hospital wing. Get very cold though on the way back so take jumpers and coats!!

Re: San Francisco
Had a 1 week stopover there last year ... great place but thought 5 days would probably been enough.
Rented an appartment in the suburbs which was great for us.
Buy a MUNI(bus&tram) pass or a city pass ... http://www.google.co.nz/aclk?sa=l&ai...6adpos%253D1t1
Be on your guard if you travel into or through the "Tenderloin" district .. its a bit on the rough side.
