can i just say that they figures are not 100% accurate, Gary is a spark and is on an almost $200,000 salary, saying that he does work off shore so it is higher, but his previous job was not off shore and he was on $127,000

yet here it states trades as highest at $53,000 thats quite a bit off huh!!

Sounds like a bit of a niche market so you may be getting paid more for certain trades in specialist areas.

You can say what you like, but maybe you misunderstand the meaning of average? $200k isn't an average NZ salary by any stretch of the calculator.

no i know that, i appreciate that Gary is in a really well paid job, but i don't think for a spark 53 k is either, even at his lowest Gary was never paid this
so i think they have got trades way out.

They being Seek who are going by the advertisements being placed on their website by employers. Clearly your man is not in an 'average' kind of trades role.

A quick search on Seek would tell anyone the state of play:

Sorry - we couldn't find any Trades & Services jobs in New Zealand paying at least $200k per year
The next level down at $150k to $200k returns one job for a General Manager

Lowering our sights and honing in on the more specifics and you get:

11 Electricians jobs in New Zealand paying $80-150k per year
None of those eleven are what I would term as your 'average' kind of sparkie job; three are for supervisor roles and four of the eleven are actually jobs in Australia.

For the record my OH is in the sparky trade in a supervisory capacity and gets $65k; you might imagine the guys with boots on the building site floor get considerably less. So yes sadly I do believe the high-end 'average' would be around the $25 per hour / $50k pa mark.

strange that they are advertising for qualified registered electricians for $25to $35 per hour then.

You really dont have any idea what you are talking about do you?

I think the one thing that does show is the lack of *range* rather than necessarily the salary (although that's obviously debateable). I could argue against figures in that, definitely. But even if it's roughly correct then the range is more narrow than in some places.

FWIW it's why I also tend to disagree when people provide 'evidence' of how much they earn in NZ and assume that a different particular job would therefore be less or more. Eg, assuming that they are in a skilled job and earning 60k and therefore an 'unskilled' job is 35k or whatever.

god i forgot how this place can jump on you when someone doesn't agree with you

When we first arrived here Gary was doing a normal bottom of the line spark job he wasn't a supervisor, nothing like that yet he was on a 90k salary so yes i do know what im talking about as he is never had a wage lower than this in NZ, he did this for 18 months before he got a new job somewhere else

it all depends where and who you work for i guess

it just doesn't paint a clear picture of what trades men can get, he got his job from Seek i should add, maybe at this second in time that is all they have to offer but not always

also as i said, the salary he is on now is because he is working off shore, as are most of the sparks i know here as in friends, no spark i personally know is earning below 90k so again yes i know what im talking about

gee some people on here dont like to see others do well and they blame Kiwis for having red poppy syndrome

It's not about you, it's not personal and it's not about disagreeing with you or actually caring how much you do or don't have. You're OH is clearly an outlier to the 'norms' and you only need have to look at the language used on that Seek article to get some inkling that almost anything over $100k is deemed to be extraordinary, in almost any field of employ. I know of some pretty high earning folks with some hefty old job titles, yet none of them come close to $200k and certainly none of them would be shouting it from the rooftops.

Consulting and Strategy - a new entry in the top spot with the potential to earn a tidy $123,556

Mining, Resources and Energy - still in the top ranks with the possibility of raking in $111,982

Engineering – an increase this month of 2.7% has seen this industry engineer a position amongst our top performers with the potential to pull in $99,457.

I think something like only 5% of NZ's population earn over 120k.

200k is such a massive, huge wage for any one. Maybe with the exception of a surgeon or the PM. I would say $50-60k for a sparky working for someone on land is about right. $90k as an electrician on shore is huge, huge money. Kate earns about $75k as a senior nurse with a role of staff (and in a very niche area where a masters is needed), that is very, very good money in NZ.

i dont normally tell anyone what Gary earns now as i know its alot of money,i only mentioned it here to state the difference

Genisis i agree, but the job he is in now is very dangerous and he is working with high voltage, he is one of the only 2 people in Taranaki that has experience in it, so im guessing thats why the high salary that and he works away from home 3 weeks at a time, so he gets extra for that of course.
good thing is he gets 3 weeks off at a time too for lots of family time, so it works itself out

Salary is all relative, if you earn $50k you will spend $50k, if you earn $200k you will spend $200k.

Depending on the sector you work in will dictate your wage, private owned compamies can sometimes pay over the odds as they have no shareholders, but on the flip side their income can also be less so they might pay less.

I have been here 4 years now and have not been on a salary less than $60k and I have moved jobs 3 times
