Nowt wrong with Auckland - totally depends where you live. Some areas are outstandingly gorgeous and others not so much! It's where the majority of jobs are though. It wasn't our first choice at all but I got a job and now we live here. Absolutely love it. You can easily live practically in the sticks, have a semi-rural life and still work in or near the city. My advice would be don't dismiss Auckland out of hand.

Or at least about 25%-30% of them. Agree with the rest of your post, it has some lovely suburbs.

Nothing wrong with living in Auckland, but how long does it take you to get to work if you live in the sticks?

I work in Takanini and live in Maraetai - 25 minute commute. Also only a 40 minute journey to the CBD (outside commuter hours of course).

Calling all Wellingtonians: are there any areas in Wellington that should be avoided?

In central/(and Eastern airport side of) Wellington...no not really but heed the school decile advice...once you get outside the outer suburbs beyond Petone then yes maybe...relative housing cost...sq metres per dollar expended tends to push most people up the Kapiti coast/Hutt Valley a bit.

I don't want to be negative but I'm sure most people tend to underestimate their commute in Auckland. Granted Maraetai to Takanini no doubt is 25 mins as you're unlikely to be hitting much commuter traffic. Heading into Auckland CBD from there would be a different matter entirely.

Since most houses in NZ are detached (unlike UK) it can actually be quite hard to spot bad areas sometimes. There can be grotty houses mixed in with nice houses in goodish areas as well and just because it looks grotty on outside doesn't mean it is so on the inside and vice versa...
Agree, seems to be an obsession with detatched houses, combined with sub divisions means in some areas houses are practically on top of each and looking into each others living room, and zero garden.

It's not an obssession as such. In fact NZ was the land of the 1/4 acre section and it was every Kiwi's dream to own one.

A lot of Kiwi's today have caravans or properties (bachs) at the beach and/or boats, sports etc activities they want to be doing at the weekends. The days of yesteryear spending the weekend mowing lawns and tending gardens are over. Houses have also got much bigger over the last 25 years.

Have you tried going through the back of Panmure and Glen Innes to Kohimarama and down Ngapipi Road to the water front ?

I live in Botany and it takes me about 30 minutes each morning. Usually a bit longer coming home as lower Ti Rakau Drive can be very heavy.

There are problems in all countrys, dont just expect it to be paradise and the only reason your emigrating.

plus the real estate agents will tell you where to avoid, they did us, and plus look at the house prices, you get alot more for your money in the rough areas so that should tell you
