Re: Qantas Grounds all Flights!
No surprise really when their pilots were on half a million bucks a year - not really sustainable.
The unions rule in Oz, the cleaner on a ship I was on over there got over $100K a year for 4.5 months work a year!
There is a place for unions, but when they get too strong they hurt the people they are supposed to represent.

IMO this is what they need to do with the Tube workers in London - put up with a few of weeks of disruption in order to ensure the public is not held to ransom in future.

There is only so much sympathy I can feel for a company that is on track to doubled its profitability this year. What the staff are asking for amounts to less than one eighth of the airlines expected profits this year.
Looking at the business as a whole the staff aren’t being unreasonable IMO.

Like the farce with BA 10 years ago where they were trying to get rid of restrictive practices, like Gate Gourmet only being allowed to wash up with one hand, or a separate bus needing to be sent to a plane for the Captain and co-pilots as they would not go on the same bus as the stewards etc!
Australian unions would cripple any country not so well endowed with mineral wealth. I had my fill of them when the big tough IRs (able-bodied seamen) sat by and watched a wee girl surveyor struggle with a heavy bit of kit on the back deck of their boat because it wasn't in their job description to help - wankers!

n August, Joyce announced a major restructuring that included establishing two new subsidiary carriers in Asia, using cheaper labour, and 1000 job losses to save the airline's loss-making international arm.
The unions are insisting on reciprocal conditions for employees of any Qantas subsidiary businesses overseas, a demand that Joyce claims will kill the airline.

The pilots' union wants to force us to pay Jetstar pilots on code-share flights the same high rates that they get at Qantas. This would set a wages precedent that would soon put an end to Jetstar and slash low-cost travel in Australia.

The outsourcing of maintenance has not only managed to destroy the company's safety reputation, but is now going to destroy itself from within. Can't see shareholders being too happy, eh?
Well done ALAE, stick to your guns.
And Woodlea, you'll see engineers constantly upgrading their skills, normally accepting increased responsibility for little or no reward. it's endemic in the industry.

Funny you should mention shareholders not being happy with cost cutting because you'll never believe when the next round of cuts was announced.
Yes, it just so happened it was the day after the annual general meeting of shareholders .

Where there was a vote overwhelmingly in favour of the board's proposed position. Unsurprising given that the airline is bleeding tens of millions a day as a result of the union threats to passengers.

Julia might have to step in and nationalise Qantas - could help her flagging popularity?
Imagine the horror of being stuck in NZ or Oz and there being no airline to fly you out?
