Proof Kiwi rip-off housing!

You only have to glance at the housing problem to see the Resource Management Act is stifling quality, affordable housing.

Re: Proof Kiwi rip-off housing!
It defies belief that earthquake damaged houses are being allowed to be sold.
We looked at houses to buy when we lived in Christchurch a couple of years ago.
I had to say to myself, 'you are buying a house that is broken' to tell myself why we weren't buying.
Regarding people buying earthquake damaged houses in Chch to let them to tenants, aren't slum landlords illegal ?

Silverdale is a new development and is very sterile (think stepford wives crossed with Pleasantville).
Whangaparaoa is nothing more than a big Wharehouse and countdown, Gulf harbour is the most soulless place I have ever lived,
Orewa is old folks central but has a nice beach. Cant find much good to say about the place really

For davros1984:
Reading this thread I cannot help but urge you to carefully consider your move back to the UK. You say that you love living in NZ - that is all anyone can ever hope for. You earn a fair salary in a profession that will always be in demand and can offer you numerous career paths in the future (project management, consultancy etc). It would appear the only motive for moving is the price of property which is only a short term view. If you did move back would you not regret it in years to come, simply because you lacked 20k GBP or so for a deposit. Just be patient, save a little longer or perhaps compromise and buy a decent apartment in Auckland. It is your first time buy after all. Just look at the bigger picture that is all I am trying to say. You have plenty of time on your side for the dream NZ home. Good luck !!

Just wanted to chip in and say that is a very jaundiced view of this area. We have lived here for eight years and love it. For an old folks home, Orewa and surrounds have an amazing number of primary schools, all with steadily growing rolls - there must be something in the water I suppose for all these OAPs to be breeding so rapidly. As for nothing here, there are beautiful beaches, any number of sports clubs, shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, parks (check out Wenderholm, Shakepear, Mahurangi for starters). I commute into Devonport every day, average driving time is about 43 minutes. If you need to get into the CBD, the bus from Albany park and ride is the quickest option for a total trip time of around 50 minutes. I wouldn't recommend the rush hour drive into CBD or points south though - although plenty do this.
Horses for courses I guess - if you want wall to wall night clubs it's not the place for you, but if you don't like what this area has to offer I'd question why you are in NZ.

Its just as you imagine it, Gods waiting room.
Its not part of the city and feels totally detached from it. Its not even close or handy for the city.
I moved there when I first went to Aux and as it was all new to me at the time it seemed ok, but time passed and
I soon began to feel detached from everything. It wouldn't have been so bad if there was some kind of community feel
but there is nothing.
A commute will take you over an hour in rush hour with the traffic coming to a standstill from Greville road onward.
I quite fancied it when I was in Aux but the realty is completely different. there is NOTHING there. Really really NOTHING.
Silverdale is a new development and is very sterile (think stepford wives crossed with Pleasantville).

I think there are skewed views of everywhere. Personally, I love Orewa,Gulf Harbour, to the south - Puke, Patumahoe, Bombay, Harrisville. Auckland born and bred, and I love those regions. And happen to live in one of them.

Interesting Location Location Location tonight, amazing what people will pay for shoeboxes that are that close to London! And I thought it was cheap as chips over there....well that's what we are led to believe....

London has never been cheap, it's the capital of England. The further up North you go the cheaper it gets. Really well built houses too.
