Re: police officer ?
I haven't got a lot of time right now, so a brief reply for the time being & will try to write a more informative PM later today.
Hubby is a police officer here...had been in the UK as well & was lucky enough to get on one of the UK recruitment schemes they ran a few years back. Those are no longer happening, unfortunately.
The pay as a junior cop is not good, although it increases once you've completed the basic training course, & again at increments with experience.
All new recruits have to complete a 19 week basic training course at the Police college in Porirua (nr Wellington).
It can be hard to get a job in "desirable" locations, the waiting list for vacancies in Christchurch for example (because I know that's your current location) is huge, and with the recession cops are staying put. It might not be a well paid job, but it's a secure one, so at the moment I believe there's not much staff turnover. New cops are being recruited to Auckland & Counties Manakau....or so I understand.
It's worth checking out their website for accurate details, something like www.newcops.co.nz I think
I do, of course have some fairly strong opinions about aspects of the job, good, bad & downright ugly, but probably best not for a public forum .....& I'm sure that my hubby will have plenty else to add, so I'll try & pm you later this evening.
