I've been trying to research the legal issues around getting a pet wallaby but I can't find any links that are New Zealand relevant?

Doesn't sound like they're very suitable pets!

Banned in NZ, no wallabies on the list! Have you a small garden? If not then why not go for one of those huge wallabies??
Alternatively there are some fauna you really can't have

Are you serious? There are wild wallabies in NZ. Down here in the south they have hunting expeditions to kill them in the Waimate hills. They are considered cullable pests to a certain extent, but probably wouldn't be allowed to be wiped out. There are a few farmyard places here that keep pet ones, and they have them in the botanical gardens is Waimate, but I doubt you'd be allowed to keep one in a house in the suburbs. You may be allowed in the country. Best bet is to ask the local council if you're in NZ now.

LOL, I meant Charismatic to catch his pet wallaby - not my OH! Dear God no! I've enough of a menagerie here as it is without some wallaby boinging around the place adding to the shit and chaos

My children are available as pets. I will hire them out on a part time basis if you don't fancy a long term commitment? You can have a choice of nearly 17, 14, 10 or 6 years old ...

Or go to Kauwau Island and try to catch yourself a spring loaded rat...
Swamp Wallabies are one of 4 or 5 species that were introduced into New Zealand by Governor William Hobson, who at different times was both the governor of NZ and New South Wales. Hobson had a private zoo on Kauwau Island with an amazing collection of exotic animals.
I am not too sure that they are still on Kauwau as they were extinct or almost extinct in Aus and some were packed up and returned to their native land for breeding. The rest were to be culled.

The Department of Conservation is making its first attempt to eradicate the Dama wallaby species, introduced almost 140 years ago, as the pest threatens native plant species.
About 370 plastic bait stations carrying 20,000 pellets of the cyanide-based pesticide Feratox have this week been laid over 800ha on Rotorua's Mt Ngongotaha.
