Default One way or return?

Has anyone got experience with buying a return ticket to NZ from the UK and not using the return leg? Have the airline charged you the excess? Apparently its more cost effective to purchase a return than a single but in the small print is says if you don't use it you could be charged the difference. There are ways round this but I just wanted to know if this had actually happened to anyone. Cheers in advance.

It is more cost effective to purchase a return than a one way.

Many buy this but make it flexible to use in the future to visit family and friends.

Not sure what you mean by 'excess'. Are you referring to luggage allowance. in which case the visa should be sufficient.

Sorry, not excess - extra, i.e. the difference between a return and a one way. (when you don't use the return leg)
