It is ok to go into a bar naked and assault a 60 year old bloke and an Australian - as long as you are an AB.

Some people go to the supermarket in their dressing gown and slippers! I even saw someone in the Mall once wearing fluffy slippers and dressing gown. Oh and people often walk around outside in bare feet "ouch"!

I hate that - how little self respect must you have to go to Pak n Save in your jammies in the middle of the day?

Also you often see parents with kids in the supermarket in their bedclothes. Usually at times when they should be in bed!

nah you're just a soft-cock, workin on it in the garage ?? - harden up or get some knee pads. :p

how can your garage floor be "usually" wet? do you soil yourself at the prospect of stroking the con rods....? or do you keep your sheep in there?? now that would be a combination, mutton and a grease gun.

you could do what one bloke I met did with his Triumph and bring it into the lounge. Just don't leave it in front of the gas fire when it has a "small" fuel leak.

Yea sucks eh! When we were flying to USA recently a family turned up with all their kids in their nightclothes for the flight at Christchurch Airport, mind you it was 4am in the morning so they probably took them out of bed to go to the Airport! Kids walking round the airport in night clothes and sucking dummies, only in NZ! Or perhaps someone will know of other countries who adopt this attitude!

Back to odd things: our neighbour looked after a whole FLOCK of sheep for her friend for a month, in her 2.5 acre section which is next to ours. They escaped, as she wasn't really geared up for sheep, so we got free chicken wire down our 50m fence, from her, to stop them coming in our garden and bothering our (sheep) dogs

Only in NZ

I am not sure if this is a local tradition, but on sunny days folks seem to gather on their deck chairs outside the front of their property (i.e. on the crossover bit between the road and their driveway) to sit and drink beer and entertain their friends. It's all very odd and I don't understand why sitting on a driveway beside a busy road is such an attraction.

I must admit they do mostly seem to be the great unwashed /jobless types; usually with a pitbull running around among them.

Public holiday surcharges

We have Public holiday surcharges; which is quite good because it means on busy holiday weekends you can generally find a seat in a cafe because people take real issue about paying it and we have this ongoing debate and dilemma nine times every year about paying the extra 15% service charge on public holidays. Lots of cafes and restaurants close for two weeks Christmas holidays.

Noticing the disparity between the quality of hospitality venues, and the subsistence income of the people working in them, the New Zealand Labour Government, sometime in the late 2000s, legislated mandatory time-and-a-half pay on public holidays – a fairly standard piece of law in larger, overseas economies. In response, New Zealand’s “nation of small business owners” set about passing on this increased cost to their customers. But not, as even a half-wit, Year 10 Economics drop out would advise, by spreading the price increase through-out the year. Rather, in a fit of protest – and demonstrating the collective intelligence of Michael Laws’ talkback radio audience – the majority of businesses instead chose to add a surcharge to the bill, of anything up to 20%, on public holidays only.

New Zealand T-Shirts

Nothing informs the world of wearer’s modest Kiwi patriotism better than a printed T-Shirt with words or images cleverly rearranged into the shape of New Zealand. Ironic, then, that 99% of these are worn exclusively in this country only.

Fireworks can only be sold on four days of the year - 2nd to 5th of November, because they are very dangerous.

Shops open at midnight on 1st November to get a few more hours of selling time.

Nuts-R-US!!

yeah and

people let them off for no reason over the next 3 or 4 weeks, or hoard them in their garages/kitchens/whatever, safe that is.........TBH seen more kids holding fireworks and letting them off over here in 5 years than I ever saw in the UK in 40 years there - she'll be right

of course then there are the BB guns/ammo (maybe they are real?) being sold in the dollar shop so the kids can have real fun for the rest of the year imitating the hunters on Hunting Aetearoa by going after boars in their local bit of bush. perhaps this isn't odd but it could be construed as dangerous

Re the fireworks - at least you guys get 4 days to buy your fireworks. In most Australian states, fireworks for personal use have been banned altogether for decades!!

People who park in front of their houses, or even garages, ON THE PAVEMENT, directly blocking the footpath, because they can't be bothered having to drive in then reverse out. What's that all about ?

Indicating right when going straight ahead at a roundabout ? My kiwi husband does that (and did do when we lived in Britain). It drives me bananas !

So would I! I moved to a nice suburb on the North Shore and have seen more teenagers firing the fireworks from their hands on the beaches and park across the road from me than I care to ever see again!

We have never bought them for around 10 years after my son was burned by a sparkler. We tend to stay away from home firework displays and watch from the safety of our house, or go to properly organised displays.
