It's a no win situation for him either way-if he helps her someone will say it shows favoritism, if he ignores it, then he's accused of not helping family.

Tough situation either way...a get out would be to offer to pay legal fees and let the courts decide maybe?

Legally he can't help her - he doesn't have that jurisdiction.
Whether he wants to help with her legal fees is his own business - but unless he actually knows her and has a relationship with her I can't imagine why he would.
