Sorry to bump this back up, but saw this on the front page of the Dom Post's website: Crappy motorists return from hols  I guess the Kapiti area is really popular, or at least a lot of people drive through it. ;)
Is it best to sit a test here, bearing in mind how bloody finnicky the instructors can be, or better to do it in NZ. (On the thought that the person taking the test has driven for 10+ years in the UK) |

I know this is a good old fun thread, but can anyone answer me this question?

All you have to do, as far as I was concerned, was have an eye sight test and pass the scratchy test. No examination with an instructor. You get a year to get your license as well.
Would it be better to take a test here or is the NZ one easier?? |
Re: NZ Driving Licence
So if on my licence im entittled to drive a car a m-bike and have a class1, do i have to resist a different theory for all three again within a year of being in NZ?

Get this - I've checked and those on visas/PR only need to get an NZ driving licence if they have lived in NZ continuously for +12 months. If you go out of NZ for any period of time, when you return your 12 month continuous perid starts over. I.e. Go on a foreign holiday once per year and you don't need an NZ licence.
(I'm not sure if this still counts after you've lived on PR for a period of +2 years but certainly counts whilst you still need a Returning Residents Visa). Loopholes, don't you just love 'em. Can i ask where you got this info from because not long ago it was posted here that you had to get an NZ licence 12 months after your first entry to the country unless there was a substantial gap between that time and re-entering. Makes a difference to us if your info is correct as we first entered in May 2007 before moving over in July 2007. I've left the country since then (Oct) and the wife is likely to with work, so if what you're saying is right we could happily continue on our UK licences for some time yet. |

This story doesn't cast it in the best light but the hard facts are you don't need to renew the licence if you leave NZ for any amount of time during a continuous 12-month period. |

Errr..... so are you saying you've been driving without a UK licence on the UK roads for the last 10 years.......
Nicci, take the test where you are more comfy. Actually no, don't... to get a full NZ licence and *not* take the practical driving test, you have to prove that you have had a full licence for 2+ years. So start from scratch here, I would say. Just my $0.02. :) |

Plus it is more cost effective to take all the theory tests together one after the other. If you take them seperately it is about $80 a test, if you take them all on the same day you pay about $80 for the first and then about $30 for the additional tests. Also having a kiwi driving license will reduce your excess on your car insurance - well it does for AMI !! If you have an UK license you seem to have to pay a premium. Good luck |
