Re: NZ dilemma
Most of the time, absolutely not. Occasionally you do meet the odd one who is open to new ideas but sadly they are a rarity. They are usually married to a foreigner or have lived and worked in another country for a year or more.

Also, remember that a very high proportion of Aucklanders have lived outside of NZ, so you may find yourself enjoying conversations with a wide range of people.

It depends on whether you are one of the poms who likes 'telling it like it is' in which case you will hear sullen silence, or are willing to listen and learn from people with different backgrounds without always comparing things to the UK, in which case you will get more engagement.

Re: NZ dilemma
Not just Aucklanders, a common figure bandied about is a million kiwis overseas (semi permanently eg Australia or on OE). Of course Brit migrants to NZ are well read, knowledgeable creme de la creme but you might be surprised at the extensive experience of a high percentage of kiwis compared to Brits etc :-)

Think Ireland losing all it's youth or Greece today.
Many New Zealander's were driven out because of the deliberate neoliberal policy of unemployment and poverty implemented by both Labour and National (is there any difference?).
If you don't believe me and you've got an hour and a half to spare, watch this documentary to the end:

Re: NZ dilemma
You need some background into New Zealand's deregulation of the 80'-90's which was more extreme than in most other countries.
