The Mayans say that there will be the end of the world because their calendar ends in December 2012. Why don't they just continue their calendar? If our celendar ended on dec 31st 2010 then we would just put on Jan 1st 2011.

If the world is coming to an end over here in blighty can immigration please send our ITA? Selected from t'pool and waiting for the thump of ITA pack on the doormat.

Plenty of dust on our cars here and mixed reviews from the news agency, do we stay in or go out? Cruel irony of this in that we have had nice weather the last couple of days (crikey was that the summer?)

PS - ok for food here for a while, plenty of tins of Heinz beans still in the cupboard.

Sounds like a 'top tip' from Viz. Like it. Apparently it is a new order post 21st Dec 2012. Not a cataclysmic event the 2012 movie suggest. But never the less change is in the air..ah yes an election in the home country. By the way the Mayans are pretty thorough..they even have a time on it.....just avo morning tea. Which is nice.

The Maya weren’t that smart any way. This was a civilisation more backwards than a group of Spanish men with muskets and, despite having built roads, never realised the potential use of wheels as a mechanism for reducing friction. They never even figured out metal tools but did like playing a ball game after which the loser would be killed. Should I take their predictions about the future seriously? I think not (unless we are going to have a public holiday).
Oooops thought the Mayans died out because of a meteor... the Incas and the Aztecs were overthrown by the Spanish ...

The Mayans have been mis-interpreted for ages. All they ever wrote was burned by the spanish when they invaded South america.

Only 1 or 2 books remained intact to this day. Very little is known about their language at all.

Don Alejandro Perez is the current Mayan Elder who is in charge of over 400 Mayan tribes in South America (distant relations mind you) and he is on you tube saying that all the talk of 2012 being the end of the world is complete fearmongering nonsense made up by the western world to make $$$.

Wouldn't have thought those sailors in the ships are earning a fortune, I'd have thought most ships are foreign registered and fly under flags of convenience. Hence the ship running agroundnr Great Barrier reef recently and the the latter example of the Chinese ship taking the similar short cut.

Someone raised the question of 'underground/sea atomic testing. Does it still go on? I know France used to- but thought they had been banned.
There are enough crackpot dictators of countries involved in developing 'THE BOMB' could they be doing secret testing?

As for Iceland- well its banks caught out a lot of greedy speculators, then the country's economy nearly collapsed and had to have help from Europe- now it's spewing filth over Europe and bringing the EC airline industry to its knees.
They must feel it's some sort of divine retribution.

4th March Scientists studying seismic activity reports in Iceland reported:-
A few weeks ago it was noted that there were increasing signs that an eruption could occur on Iceland - increased seismicity on the Reykjanes Ridge suggested that magma might be on the move. There is a focus of seismicity under the area of Eyjafjallajökull
Yet it appears that the Icelandic Met Office doesn't think this is leading to an eruption!!!
What is it with these Met people? They seldom get the weather right and now they discount expert evidence!

I've thought that there seems to be more big disasters taking place in the last couple of decades, but that might be because more are reported/known about world wide with improved technology and people settling in areas of danger.
If anyone is really interested, check this out:-http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35618526/

Iceland is one of the most vocanically active regions in the world. These eruptions here could go on for several months, not just days or weeks.

Mother Nature teaches us all a lesson once in a while.

From what I can recall the Mayan calendar goes in cycles and December 2012 is just the end of another calendar cycle. So if it were really relevant in this day and age it would just start again from day 1. The main cycle was every 52 years and then the years repeated themselves. This was longer than the average lifespan at the time and for everyday life there was no real need to have a system which could project much further into the future. Besides the Gods may not grant you another 52 years on Earth
They also had a longer cycle which could measure over 52 years and I think that it is one of these cyles that is coming to an end on 21/12/2010.
History lesson now over for the day!!

I'm still planning where to spend Xmas and holidays for next year

New Zealand is not to shaby on the Active Volcanoe stakes either

http://www.geonet.org.nz/volcano/activity/

The North Island of New Zealand actually rangs as the 4th Largest Volcanic Island in the world, Iceland being 6th.

http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-top...c-islands.html

As far as I am aware the last time a Volcanic eruption killed anyone was 1886 (124 years ago) when Mt Tarawera, Rotorua erupted.

No need to panic though you may never see a big eruption in your lifetime here.
