NZ "cuisine"

Re: NZ "cuisine"
Hopelessly off topic but then you did bring it up we get Bega vintage cheddar here and I think it's rather nice, esp as a bog-standard every day cheese. Definitely require some stilton or summink for Christmas though.

Stilton? I should be so lucky. Mr BEVS may well get his chompers into some as he is back in the UK in a few days time.

Re: NZ "cuisine"
Bega is marginally better and the vintage would be best no doubt but still a bit tame. Who knows, the stuff you get may well be different as it's for export.

I don't miss much except Weizen and Kölsch.
I really enjoy Kumara, Kiwis, Avocados and the seafood selection. I think the hard unripe Kiwis that we get in Europe most of the time are a disgrace.
I don't like Feijoas (OH really loves them so I still buy them) and sausages.

Couldn't get any stilton** today <cries> so that's that. Got some nice camembert, and parmesan, and Wensleydale. I can't even remember if I like Wensleydale, but makes a change.
**I did see a nice Aussie blue cheese called I think Roaring 40s. Do ya know that one? I didn't buy it as it was an outrageous price. Little piddly bit of cheese and wanted 40 ringgits... that's AUD 12.50 or NZD 15.75. I just couldn't.
Oops off topic again. Sorry Mr Mod

Sushi - now that I know how much sugar, etc is used to prepare some of it, not the "healthy choice" it's cracked up to be - and that is because I may be addicted.....

Re: NZ "cuisine"
Don't know if wine counts as cuisine. Not really I suppose but is does accompany it.
Both NZ and Oz produce some stunning wines, some of it not too expensive.
Some Aussie wines are cheaper in the UK becuase 80% of the yield is sent to the UK.

If we are talking wines now, I wish to say that Catchafire's straw wine is mesmerising. It really is. Amazing. I was a bit stunned by it TBH.

Like:
NZ lamb - excellent. Pork, beef and chicken is great too.
No excuse not to cook from scratch with fresh ingredients. (OK, need to drop cream and cheddar from the recipes - but that can wait until new year !)
Potatoes - ok, with you on the King Edward front but the loose potatoes seem to suffice.
Sausages - never liked them so not liking them in NZ is not difficult !
Bacon - what went wrong ? This country can do so much food really well, what the deal with crappy bacon ?
Watties baked beans - um, I've learned to like the slightly smoky flavour.
Watties soup - just not happening with me, sorry.
Ready meals - um, crumb fish and oven chips with frozen peas is the nearest we get to a ready meal, just like we did in Britain. Unless we get a takeaway.
Curry - I make them at home. Have yet to have one at our local curry places.
Pies - yum yum, award winning Chicken, cranberry and pistachio pies at Element Café in Wanganui (good enough for John Key when he was a guest of Wanganui Mayor Anette Main and good enough for me).
Anything freshly baked in NZ is excellent.
I don't mind a sausage wrapped in a slice of bread - have you never had a pig in blanket ? That's what I knew them as in Britain.
Watties ketchup ? I had some once and the sky didn't fall in. Still prefer Heinz though.
Asparagus - had some at a social function a couple of weeks ago, ok they were picked that morning and lightly boiled, they were lovely, I was almost converted to liking it - thanks NZ. (Tinned asparagus in a sandwich - oh purleeze )
Cheese - nice but salty. That's everything i.e. cheddar, edam, brie, blue cheese etc.
Wine - St Clair, Oyster Bay, Mission, all make great white wines, other wine makers are available. Lindauer great party fizz !
Fish - excellent i.e. hoki, cod, snapper, salmon (oily, I agree), scallops.
Fish and chips from a chip shop are great just remember to specify no salt or they'll put what tastes like about 200g of salt per serving on it !
Don't like:
Feojas (they just look like limes) although, I like limes, avocado (some people have it mashed on a sandwich - a peculiar NZ habit !). Yams - yes those funny looking red things that look like infected fingers - WTF?
Whitebait - again - WTF ? I was told how nice whitebait fritters are. I ordered one in a chip shop and was surprised to be given a small omelette filled with snotty beansprouts. I singularly fail to understand why whitebait is so popular in this country. I like crunchy whitebait !
Kumera - don't go there ! Can't bear it, that's sweet potato of any variety. OK, I'll eat it if someone has gone to the bother of cooking it along with roasted pumpkin etc, but other than to be polite, no thanks.
Prawns - why are they such a disaster (IMO) in NZ ? They come from the coast of Asian countries and have no flavour, such a disappointment. Oh how I long for Norweigan Prawns. My husband is a kiwi and doesn't understand why they don't farm prawns in the Southern Ocean.
NZ Vinegar - sold in catering sized bottles and just not nice, I've got Sarsons vinegar in my kitchen.
NZ Chocolate, yes that includes Cadburys - I had a food hamper sent to me for Christmas, I'd forgotten what proper Cadburys chocolate tastes like.
NZ Marmalade - in who's universe is that Marmalade ? I buy proper marmalade from an ex-pat shop.
