You are right many kids are overscheduled...I have deliberately avoided this with mine but alas they mostly opt for the trappings of modern childhood (tv, computers etc) with which to fill their ample free-time. Imaginative play/rough and tumble do feature but even left to their own devices not as much as I'd like. At least I let them chill most days after school though.

I used to play 'Avenue tennis' in the 1960s and well remember shouting out 'car'...this would simply not be possible in our current location nor our last EU one....would have been just about do-able at our UK house (cul de sac).

Stranger-danger has made my generation of 'older parents' very overprotective and I include myself in this.
