New Arrival in Wellington
Hi all!
I'll be arriving in Wellington at 5.30pm on Friday evening at the end of October. Still working on somewhere to stay, but I'm not panicking yet...
Are places generally closed for the weekend or is it a 24 hour city?
And can anyone suggest anything to do or see over the weekend and first few days?

Hi Sol
A few of us meet for an ex-pat meet up virtually every weekend in Welly, usually a Sunday so perhaps we could get together and introduce you to others.
Things to do, if its raining - Te Papa museaum or the Maritime Museaum, otherwise visit Mount Victoria where you will get great views of Wellington City and suburbs (athough you will need a car to get around), gorgeous walks around the harbour. Visit Scorching Bay and the chocolate fish cafe (before it closes down) - big visitor attraction. Or, you could do the touristy thing and book a tour around Wellington where they will show you certain places where Lord of the Rings was filmed.
There is also Wellington Zoo or travel by ferry across to Somes Island in middle of the harbour (Scientific and Historic Reserve) - great on a nice day. Or, catch a cable car in the city centre up to the Botanical Gardens, stunning place. If you really want to push the boat out, take a helcopter ride over the city.
All shops open on a Saturday in the city centre but usually in the suburbs all close about 2pm. Sunday, there are some shops open in the centre but not all.
Will PM you our email if you want to get in touch.
