Re: Mine explosion
My lovely, funny Kiwi neighbour came over this evening for a variety of reasons.
He has said that the best coverage to be found is via the BBC world news.
It isn't looking good TBH

Re: Mine explosion
The BBC has named two men from Scotland who are missing in the mine blast. Not looking good all round though as poisonous gas has been detected. A team of mine rescue experts has been organised and deployed by Emergency Management Australia, and I guess all we can do now is hope, pray and wait.....

Re: Mine explosion
How are they ventilating the shafts currently? If they are just waiting for it to clear of its own accord it could take months to ventilate out gasses .

Re: Mine explosion
There's a shaft through which they are blowing fresh air in apparently, and they are trying to drill a second through which they'll also try and get a camera in, but reports say that the rock is really hard so its a long job - 24 hours or more.

Re: Mine explosion
Got to admit that on reading the info we have been getting at work, plus the news reports, it doesn't sound good. Absolutely no contact since it happened, and even the two guys that got out were in a bit of a state so it sounds like whatever happened was pretty nasty. Added to the fact something inside seems to be still burning or smoldering, plus the gas problem........

Re: Mine explosion
It's awful to be pre-empting the type of rescue but as it's a coal mine with ongoing uncertainty , it really isn't looking that good is it.
My heart goes out to the families and the community. I just hope beyond hope that they are in a safe pocket & there is a miracle.

Re: Mine explosion
This is extremely local to my wife's part of NZ. She knows at least one of the missing miners, and her uncle, Tony Woolhouse, who was key to rescuing the miners from the Beaconsfield mine disaster in Tasmania is flying to NZ to help with rescue efforts.
I was particularly saddened to hear one of the miners was 17 and this was his first time underground.
