Been away for the weekend at the beach. Started thinking about what I really miss about my life in NZ and it was doing the lifestyle thing. Whilst we live in a nice ward it is all very suburban. May come to nothing but am going to look at this tomorrow. Have all me finance agreed in principle and will raise a mortgage on our Palmy home and change some of our UK wedge for the deposit on the new, well very old actually home.

Will rent this place and forget it for 2 years on a fixed mortgage.

New place is just out of Ashhurst.

I was going to say that you can't buy an 'old, old' home in NZ, coz European settlers haven't been here long enough for any home to get 'old, old'.

But I won't! :lol:

Instead, I will say "Make sure you get a full survey done". It's worth the extra, coz you have someone to blame/sue if it falls down a week later! Do they have termites in NZ...?

<But then, this is Genesis... I may need to keep my trap shut so he doesn't worry himself to death...>

Thank you all for your kind words, nothing really to worry about apart from flooding, borer, dry rot (wet rot when it is flooded) and those burglars who target old, insecure homes in the middle of nowhere!!!!:eek:

PS Ashhurst makes Palmy look like Monaco.

I much prefer this one as the section is way more pretty and not so flat. The house is a bit ugly and much smaller and alas they are pretty much the same price as this one is just out of town rather than the other one which is 4 light years away hence its cheap price relative to its size. Alas, alas Kate does not see the value in this 'ugly pile of shite'.

Good, poorly subdivided land is my pet hate.

Like, you know, when you buy land and it doesn't have legal access to a road, so you have to stop driving across you neighbors lawn and going to work. Eventually you grow angry and rueful, you would buy some Amazon things to make you happy but you don't have a post box or money. You seethe with anger and frustration at a society that could allow this to happen? :sneaky:

Know what I mean? Huh? No? Maybe it's just me then :o.

The house is nice also, you should buy it but not tell your wife or children. Just have it as a place to go and enjoy yourself :).

Good point. I live in a CH and double glazed house right now, the 2 we are looking at have neither. We have to look at all the negative issues and I remember how much I hated the condensation in this place afore DG when we moved in. On the plus side these houses may be able to have some DVS sysytem to circulate the air, our present house has no roof void and as such you cannot have a DVS system so we run dehumidifiers along with the DG to keep the house dry (families 'drip' about 30 litres a day in water by breathing, cooking, washing et al.)

Thanks, not quite so simple, this will cost us a huge amount of money and it is quite a gamble keeping both houses. If we cannot rent the one we are in now we will have a VERY BIG mortgage and no rental income to pay for it. At present we seem to be terrible at managing Kate's wages as we spend everything and more each month yet we are presently mortgage free.

This will be a BIG culture shock for us and as I say it is going to be very expensive if we take the plunge for either house. Having said all that you only live once and I am going to be sorely tempted by the 'ugly house' over the twee one. It is very local to where we are now yet set in 10 acres of hilly woodland and gardens. It is much smaller than the other one but the twee one will be a bastard to maintain and the section is not a 'interesting'.

The twee one will be more expensive to heat as it is about 150sq mts bigger, it is also about $50k more which makes a huge difference. It is also a 20 min drive out of town. The ugly one has a drive to die for and I have always, always wanted a **** off drive!!!

Wouldn't you much rather have money to travel instead??? One thing I miss, and we are going to Queensland in August and saving for maybe the USA next year, life's to short to have a huge debt agree?? But we are all different I guess :starsmile:

Will still go to the Uk next xmas for 8 weeks. Re the debt I guess if you want to own a home or 2 most of us need a mortgage. Alas we don't have enough to own both!! Who does!!! The mortgage will be around 230-300k. Manageable with the rent coming in and Kate's wages could cover it if we went on bread and water and could not rent the house we currently live in!!

Sometimes it is all about making a move isn't it Genesis. Doesn't have to be a huge move. Just something that seems to 'fit' better.

The 2nd one seems more you but what can I tell from a few pictures. The house appears more practical for a family & the location not too far from the familiar . I take it a good commute for Kate and for kids activites

It would keep you busy with that acreage ,though I feel there is potential for you to stretch out and perhaps develop a key interest/hobby into maybe a cottage type industry.

Just what I was thinking. So what if I have sweaty windows and a bit of grass to cut! Have to look at the bigger picture eh? What I do know is that I do believe stagnation is setting in and I need a release from the chains of suburbia and to be set free unto the land of Narnia to make little woody things that no one will want to buy.

I sooooooo want to live lifestyle!!!!! Takes 20 mins from our house to drive out to the one in Ashhurst. The old girl is a bit tired and needs some TLC. I could be moved if the local one does not pan out or Kate says a big no to it. She really prefers this one and I can see why. I really do need a big life change and this could be it.

Very nice rambling old villa which was original two houses moved from town and bolted together in Ashhurst.

Could be a nice little money spinner if I was allowed to do functions on the section as the views are really quite amazing.

I GUESS WE WILL KNOW COME NEXT WEEK IF WE ARE PUTTING AN OFFER IN EH?

So. Will you be looking to upgrade then. A do-up? Insulation. Double glazing. etc.

Villa's can be really rather good , although not sure about the heating of the thing.

Got to be careful about over capitalizing on the house. Spent well, well over $100k on this place in simple upgrades and that is why I will not sell it now. Hope that the next few years will bring some growth on the value and moreover we may well move back in here when the kids are bored with a lifestyle. The rent will pay the loan on the new house and the expense of insurance and rates and there will be no tax to pay as one cancels out the other (interest only mortgage, no repayments).

The only possible downsides are not being able to rent it (unlikely due to its proximity to big employers just over the back) and any costs relative to the house's maintenance. I can do the little, unskilled stuff but could not replace a boiler or water tank like your man!!

I like them both! But then I would, wouldn't I!? But I prefer the first one :) and you could plant some lovely trees in that lawn!

The agents reckons they were dreaming wanting $650. GV is $590. Lifestyles are apparently NOT in demand. They have just had it revalued at $685!!!!!! So we are bowing out as we can barely stretch to the GV and even if I had buckets of cash would not pay over the GV. A house is only what it is worth to you...or anyone else.

The other place is way too small for us. The search continues. Hopefully the pound will have a little kick start in value and thus we will be able to afford something better.
