Medical and under active thyroid
Hi
We have received our ITA and are fine with everything we need to do but I am worried about my medical.
I have a under active thyroid which I’m on medication for, and am overweight with a BMI around 40. Apart from that I am fine. Blood pressure good, no cholesterol, no diabetes etc. With my thyroid issues I find it hard, if not impossible to loose weight no matter how hard I try.
Anyhow I was wondering if anyone has passed a medical been overweight and having a under active thyroid?
If they fail me on my medical, is there any way/ appeal I can do?
thanks

if you fail you can get a medical waiver, not up on it I'm afraid and dont know the criteria for a waiver. Your BMI will be an issue so I would speak to your GP and ask them to get you an appointment with a dietitian and see if they can give you some advice on bringing your BMI down

You can ask for a second opinion. Likely to be a waste of more time as Immigration will have to forward your medical report to another MA, who will take another period of time to carry out a prognosis, calculate costs and recommend yeah or nay. It is highly likely a second MA will side with the first.
You can apply for a medical waiver. This application is where Immigration consider things that you will bring to NZ outweighing the fact that you are not of an acceptable standard of health....completely at their discretion. No hard and fast rule of whether you would be successful.
Only other option is to fight the ruling of the MA if you think what they are reporting is complete bolloc!@@%s.
We went with second opinion which gave us another decline so then we just fought what the MA was reporting as their calculation and prognosis was utter garbage. We employed an NZ specialist (who was not an MA) to make a determination on the wifes medical report, come up with a prognosis of what she would need in the future, cost and number of meds etc. The specialists report completely rubished what the MA report stated so Immigration had no alternative but to disregard their MA's report and approve the visas.
Highly likely we would have been accepted via the medical waiver route but we felt if we went that way we were agreeing that the Mrs wasn't an acceptable standard of health when in fact she was, so we decided to fight instead. It did delay us maybe 13 months though.
