Interesting - I interpret it as part of the less-nannie-state and take-more-individual-responsibility "thing" that I find quite prevalent in NZ (and enjoy).

Must say your experience in Wales isn't one I recognise from our English doctors - there you could only book within the next 48hrs (that was their interpretation of the govt goal of all appointments in 48hrs), consequently you couldn't get seen in a timely fashion at all much of the time, money didn't come into it!

Must say I prefer the NZ system...

Not my experience. My doc's are great here (having said that had a great one in the UK too). Cost me $41 yesturday and was in there for 30 mins (for myself).
I was really worried about medical costs as our youngest son is Type 1 diabetic.
He is always seen on the day or hour or a phone advice if needed. He sees a specialist and specialist nurse, all free and the nurse is just at the end of the phone. They do so much, giving us equipment, letters for disability allowance and driving licence stuff, exam extra time, the list goes on. our perscriptions are free after 10 for the whole family. They cost $3 otherwise per item instead of 7 pounds something in the UK.
After 10 perscriptions we got a free card (not income tested)
However found Acc nightmare

It does depend on the meds as to what is charged. Some may be free. Others ,mostly, are $3 but I've had to have some in the past that worked out at a $1 a tablet
