Default Joining RNZN

Hi, I am thinking of joining the RNZN having completed my 22years in the Royal Navy. It appears that the RNZN are willing to accept me but only as a Leading Hand. This is okay with me. However, does anyone know how fast the promotion system is in order for me to get promoted to Petty Officer? I have heard rumours that because I am a CPO in the RN that I will be fast tracked to PO in the RNZN. As much as I want to believe this, I find it hard to believe.

Also, with regards to pay. Would I sit at the top of the pay band as a Leading Hand?

I have spent more of my career as a senior rate than as a Junior rate and as strange as this may sound, I think I have lost touch with what my roles were as a junior and may take some time regaining the skills.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Dea

have you checked out

http://www.defencecareers.mil.nz/how...eas-applicants

and

http://www.defencecareers.mil.nz/how...ection-process

"The Offer will include the specific details of your employment and is subject on you:

Passing a physical medical examination and a fitness test;
Gaining necessary New Zealand security clearances; and
Gaining the right to live and work in NZ"

and

http://www.defencecareers.mil.nz/how...ts/eligibility

"You will need to independently apply for residency with the New Zealand Immigration Service as the New Zealand Defence Force are unable to get involved in the Immigration process. If you are successful through our recruiting process, we will produce an Offer of Service (Offer of Employment) which will facilitate your application for Permanent New Zealand Residency."

so looks like you would need to obtain approval for a visa to actually take up any job offer.

A friend of mine joined who was a Marine Engineer - Chief Petty Officer (boats) joined the RNZN last year as a PO, He has now been promoted to a CPO within 12 months, life in the RNZN seems to suit him and his family and they love it up in Davenport near Auckland. The only thing he had to get use to was becoming a “Skimmer” after all those years serving on Boats.!

Surprised they will only take you on as a junior rate as they find it hard to recruit experienced hands.

Think that might actually be Devonport, same as in south west UK Naval base

Hi, thanks for the information. I have already attended presentations delivered by the RNZN and it appears the process is straight forward and an offer of service of 5yrs 8 months will potentially be offered. The visa is not an issue as far as I was informed.

Thanks

Dea

Hi,

It appears that they are only recruiting at the LH level at the moment. I know it is a small Navy so not sure what the promotion opportunities are like and if I can gat promoted to PO within a timely fashion. CPO down to LH is a big drop. The way I see it is that I should hopefully receive the max pay as a LH which is NZD 63000. Not sure if this is a good wage as I believe the cost of living is really expensive. I am not totally focused on the money as long as I can live to a good standard. I am more interested in the new opportunities available in this country.

Many thanks

Dea.

Hi Dea,

I am currently a serving member of the RNZN ( Reserves) and have found the organisation to be very welcoming and a rewarding challenge.

Feel free to PM me if you have any enquiries I may be able to assist you with.

Hi Jonah,

Tried to post this earlier but just realised it hasn't worked!

This is from the Navy website,

http://www.defencecareers.mil.nz/nav...ing-conditions

Are you going through the process at the moment?

Tom.
