You'll find that IT jobs are less specialist and more general in NZ because of the sizes of organisations, but I hear that Gen-i (part of Telecom NZ) has many vacancies to fill in networking / managed services areas nation wide.

Personally I wouldn't work for them (again :mad:) but you can always find something else when you are in country

true - you need to be more of a jack of all trades.

Once you arrive you will have to deal with IT recruitment agents... :thumbdown:

CCNA is a great start - we found when job searching that they do like the design element so see if you can go down the CCDA/P route.

We also find that agencies will call for CCIE without actually understanding what that means - and that candidates can be just as good with the above and a bit of work experience.


For what its worth - i knew a girl who knew Fanny Adam about IP - yet she learned the CCNA book, from front to cover, and all the multiple choice questions and answers parrot fashion.

She got a 100% Score in her CCNA exam - but was still $h!te at her job :sneaky: . She still had to ask how to apply an IP route or bounce an interface on the 2500s. :curse: :curse: :curse: I thought it was bit of a p!$$ take really and highlights that any numpty can do a CCNA :frown: so it annoys me when agencies request a Cisco Certification and ignore what you are actually capable of.

To test that theory i did the same for an MCP, dowloaded the answers from braindumps.com and got 100% in the exam. So it's true you don't need to know jack s%&t to get the qualifications. Experience should mean more, but unfortunately in the real world you likely to find that a lot of people conducting the interviews don't know either, so take the qualifications as Sacrosanct. That's been my experience anyway as i've rarely been quizzed to great detail about my quals or experience.

Basically, that is the problem with the IT industry here. Most of the jobs are filtered through IT 'Recruitment' agents (a misnomer cos they don't employ you!)

What you get is a sales person who doesn't understand the first thing about IT.

I've seen some REALLY great CV's on "Paper". Unfortunately, when it comes time to actually do the job they are clueless.

However, the agencies love to see all the certification etc because it makes their job (to sell you and make lots of lovely $$) a lot easier.

I had one 'database guru' work for a company I worked for ('He interviewed really well') but then on the first day after a meeting pulled me aside and basically asked me (a programmer) how to write a query! I shit you not...

Also, don't forget there is no 3 month trial period to get rid of no hopers. Once you get a job its for life

The labour laws here means that once somebody employs you it's virtually impossible to get rid of you if you are useless.

Yep, once you're in you're in!

It even seems to be impossible to get rid of people on fixed term contracts once they have been renewed a couple of times employment court has held that the employee has a right to them being renewed! (OK it took an realllllllly expensive lawyer to get that judgement but it did happen)

I reckon there are loads of chancers here for that reason. They know if they get offered a job it doesn't matter if they can't do it. I have witnessed a very bad case of bullying over someone who couldn't do the job, it must be the only way to get rid of them. Poor guy was in tears some days...

Also, I saw a job for a short term tester contract. So I sent a CV to the agent (not saying who) and said I would be interested if they would look at an Analyst programmer. (After all testing aint rocket science)

She told me to change all my job titles to "Tester" and draw out all the experience of testing in my jobs. And she told me to make sure my cv was 7 pages long! :eek:

So, even the agents encourage bullshit.
