IRD Numbers
I have read a few things about getting IRD numbers before we get out there which sounds useful but on the forms from the IRD website you seem to have to put down your NZ address which we dont have yet?
How do you get around this one?
Cheers,
Neil.

Re: IRD Numbers
If you already have a job offer, you work's address should suffice until you get here. Otherwise, it is really quick to get registered once you get here

Re: IRD Numbers
The best forwarding address would be for your employer if you really want to sort everything out first.
Still not even given the bank our IRD, but IRD will have it once they get the Tax Return, which should be tomorrow!!

Don't forget to get them for the kids as well, if you have any.

We dont have jobs yet so cant use their address unfortunately so looks like we will just have to wait and get them when we get there.

Re: IRD Numbers
Its just that we are going to transfer the money from the house a couple of days before we go and if you dont give the bank an IRD number i read somewhere they will do you for full whack on the tax until you give them one. Just wanted to save a few quid.

Hi
If you open your account online before you arrive they only charge I think about 10% but once here if you don't get your IRD no. can be as much as 33% on interest only. We applied for our IRD numbers 10 days ago and got them today
Better than england as still waiting to here about our tax refund after 6 weeks been told approx 2/3 months behind!!!!!:curse:

Re: IRD Numbers
We opened a bank account in NZ whilst in the UK. We transferred our money over as we left the UK and were told it would take 4 days to go through. We arrived in NZ on a Sunday, checked the NZ bank account on Monday and the money was in. At that point we didn't have IRD numbers. There were no charges then, or since.
We went to the Christchurch Inland Revenue office, filled in a very simple form and handed it in with our passports. They took a copy of the visa and photo page and handed back the passports. A couple of days later we had a phone call to check on some details and were given our IRD numbers over the phone. The paper copy/card came about 10 days later.

Re: IRD Numbers
As far as banking goes, the banks are supposed to have IRD numbers from you but as the cheque accounts dont pay interest (well not ours anyway) there is no issue. However, if you open a deposit account then the interest you get is taxed and there is a seperate deduction at 39% off the statements, in our case the monthy interest is paid and then witholding tax at 39% taken off immediately. If you produce the IRD numbers at that point it could reduce that tax rate to the lower one - ours has not gone down yet but that should be straightened out on the next Tax Return (I hope!).
